Vehicle concept

Motorization

The maximum output of the 6.3 liter V8 engine with dry sump lubrication is limited by the FIA in accordance with the “Balance of Performance” using air restrictors. This is to ensure that the participating racing vehicles have equal opportunities. In the GT3 variant, a sequential six-speed racing gearbox with paddle shifters , integrated multi -disc limited slip differential and traction control transmits the power. As with the standard Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG , the transmission is located on the rear axle. This transaxle design ensures a balanced weight distribution. A rigid tube, in which a shaft made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (KfK) rotates at engine speed as in the street version, connects the engine installed behind the front axle and the transmission.

Racing suspension

All wheels are guided on double wishbones made of forged aluminum . Adjustment of springs and Bilstein - dampers , the vehicle height, the stabilizers as well as track and camber allow an individual setup racetrack. The rack and pinion steering with a small gear ratio and servo assistance is used for agile handling. The 18-inch alloy wheels have central locking and treadless racing tires . The car is braked by a racing brake system with internally ventilated brake discs and a racing anti-lock braking system . The integrated air lift system supports quick wheel changes.

Exterior

The body of the gullwing was aerodynamically modified, visible not only on the new front apron with splitter, the bonnet with central cooling air outlet, but also on the side wheel arch ventilation, the side skirts with cooling channels for the rear axle brakes, the smooth underbody with rear diffuser and the adjustable rear wing. This improves downforce and cooling. The tank nozzles for the quick tank system are located in the C-pillar.

Safety equipment

The steel roll cage in accordance with the FIA GT3 regulations provides additional stiffening of the aluminum space frame. Similar to the DTM vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, the individually adapted seat shell is located in a fixed, high-strength safety cell made of KfK, and the driver is protected with a six-point seat belt and HANS (Head and Neck Support) system. The position of the pedal box can be adjusted to accommodate drivers of different sizes. The vehicle is equipped with the prescribed KfK safety tank and a fire extinguishing system.

cockpit

The central display in the driver's field of vision provides information on all relevant information such as speed, engine speed, operating temperatures, lap times and the current gear selection. The racing steering wheel is equipped with paddle shifters so that you do not have to take your hands off the steering wheel while changing gear. On the center console are the controls for adjusting the traction control , reverse gear, the brake balance and the integrated fire extinguishing system.

Test driver

Long-time Mercedes-Benz works driver Bernd Schneider and Thomas Jäger were used as test drivers .

successes

After three test runs in 2010 and the 24-hour race in Dubai in January 2011, the SLS AMG GT3 was delivered to customer teams from March 2011 as part of the Mercedes-AMG customer sport program. Graff Racing's two race wins at the opening of the French GT Championship on April 9 and 10, 2011 were followed by 20 more overall victories in Europe, Asia and Australia, and Heico Motorsport won the team title in the FIA GT3 European Championship .

In 2012, 48 SLS AMG GT3 competed in 28 racing series on four continents. The vehicles achieved a total of 43 class wins and 109 podium placements. In the FIA GT3 European Championship, the Heico-Gravity Charouz team won the driver and team title , the All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport team won the driver and team title in the FIA GT1 world championship, which was held according to GT3 regulations .

In 2013, the team won Black Falcon with drivers Bernd Schneider , Jeroen Bleekemolen , Sean Edwards and Nicki Thiim at the 24-hour race at the Nurburgring .

45th Anniversary

In 2012, for the 45th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Benz presented the SLS AMG GT3 45th ANNIVERSARY at the auto show in Sao Paulo. This is a special series of the customer sport racing car limited to a maximum of five vehicles, which is handcrafted and offered at a price of 446,250 euros. The car has two seat shells in the carbon safety cell.

The body, alloy wheels and steel roll cage are painted in Designo Magno Graphit , a matt paint that is used exclusively on these vehicles. On the wing doors there is a silver-framed lettering “45 Years of Driving Performance”.

The vehicle's 6.3-liter V8 engine is assembled by Bernd Schneider and an AMG engine fitter, as proof is a special engine badge with the signature of Bernd Schneider and the responsible fitter. A vehicle certificate with the signature of the racing driver is also included in the purchase price.
