Sean Lawrence Guy Edwards (born December 6, 1986 in London , † October 15, 2013 in Willowbank , Australia ) was a British racing driver . He became the 2006 FIA GT3 European Champion . He competed in the Porsche Supercup from 2008 to 2013, with one interruption in 2009 . In 2013 he started with a Monaco racing license.

Kart and formula racing

Edwards began his motorsport career in 1998 in karting , in which he was active until 2002. He competed in the French and Italian kart championships and the European kart championships. In 2003 he moved into the single-seater racing and was a win fourth in the BRDC Formula Ford 1600. He subsequently joined the British Formula Renault at. First he was 23rd in the winter series in 2003 and 24th in the main series in 2004.

GT and touring cars

In 2005 Edwards switched to GT racing and took part in some races in the British championship. In 2006 Edwards was active in the FIA GT3 European Championship , which was held for the first time this year. He won three out of ten races and became European champion. In 2007 Edwards moved to the FIA GT Championship . With a podium finish, he finished third in the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race , and came eleventh in the GT2 classification.

In 2008 Edwards competed for Konrad Motorsport in the Porsche Supercup . He won two races and was sixth overall. He also competed in individual races in the FIA ​​GT Championship and the International GT Open . In 2009 Edwards was not consistently active in any racing series. He took part in several races in the FIA ​​GT3 European Championship and the Le Mans Series and made guest starts in the German Porsche Carrera Cup .

In 2010, Edwards received a cockpit from Tolimit Motorsport for the Porsche Supercup and the German Porsche Carrera Cup . In the Porsche Supercup, he finished the season with a victory on the sixth championship place. He finished eighth in the German Porsche Carrera Cup. Edwards also started a race weekend in the ADAC GT Masters .

In 2011 Edwards stayed with Tolimit Motorsport in the Porsche one-make cups. In the Porsche Supercup , he finished the season with a win and another four podium finishes on the fourth championship place. In the German Porsche Carrera Cup he improved to second place behind his compatriot Nick Tandy . Edwards also took part in an ADAC GT Masters event again. He also made his debut in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and was 13th in the GTC classification with two podium finishes.

In 2012 Edwards moved to Konrad Motorsport within the Porsche Supercup . He won the race in Monaco and was fifth in the drivers' championship. In the German Porsche Carrera Cup he was again runner-up behind René Rast . He won 5 of 17 races. In the ADAC GT Masters he took part in two events this season and achieved a podium finish. Edwards also took part in individual endurance races in the ALMS, Blancpain Endurance Series and Rolex Sports Car Series in GT vehicles. In the ALMS, he achieved a pole position in a Porsche and the fastest race lap in the GTC class. In the Blancpain Endurance Series, he won the GT3 Pro-Am class together with Steve Jans and Oliver Morley in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 from Black Falcon . For Black Falcon, he also won the 24-hour race in Dubai . He shared the vehicle with Khaled Al Qubaisi , Jeroen Bleekemolen and Thomas Jäger . Edwards also made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . In 2013 Edwards drove again in the Porsche Supercup. This year he competed for the Allyouneed by Project 1 team. Edwards won the first two races and then switched his racing license from a British to a Monegasque. With this he won another race. Edwards led the overall standings after the seventh of nine races, and finished second at the end of the season. In addition, after the seventh race, he finished second in the German Porsche Carrera Cup. In endurance racing, he won the ALMS GTC class with Henrique Cisneros . death

On October 15, 2013, the 26-year-old Edwards died during a private test drive with a Porsche 996 GT3 Cup from the Australian racing team Dellow Racing at Queensland Raceway in Willowbank, Australia. Edwards was the co-driver of Will Holzheimer, the son of the racing team owner David Holzheimer, and acted as a driver coach. The vehicle controlled by Will Holzheimer hit the road barrier at high speed. The car immediately went up in flames; Edwards died at the scene of the accident. Holzheimer was admitted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Edwards was buried in London on November 11, 2013 .

Personal

Edwards came from a motorsport family. He was the son of former Formula 1 driver Guy Edwards .

In addition to his motorsport career, Edwards had been active as a driver coach since 2006, he had an A license from the ARDS (Association of Racing Drivers Schools) and coached for five years at the Silverstone Racing School and for Motorsport Vision Circuits.

In the 2013 film Rush - Alles für die Sieg he played his father in racing scenes and also drove the safety car .
