Ipswich is a city in the Australian state of Queensland and is located inland about 40 km southwest of Brisbane on the Bremer River . The city is also a local administrative district with its own administration ( Ipswich City Council ).
Ipswich gained importance primarily through the mining of limestone , later also of coal and ores. Through sheep farming and the wool industry, the settlement grew into a city and due to its proximity to the metropolis of Brisbane, Ipswich now has over 300,000 inhabitants.
Ipswich has had a partnership with Wenzhou , China , since 2011
