Coordinates: 27 ° 36 ′ S , 152 ° 45 ′ E The City of Ipswich is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 1085 km² and has about 194,000 inhabitants.

Ipswich is located in the southeast of the state and borders the capital Brisbane to the east .
The administrative headquarters of the LGA is located in the Ipswich district , which has around 2500 residents. history
Ipswich began as a limestone quarry and labor camp for Moreton Bay prisoners in the 1820s. After the closure, the former overseer George Thorn stayed in the area and from 1842 laid the foundation for the settlement of Ipswich, which is named after the English Ipswich . Due to the lively exchange with the port city of Brisbane and as a connection to the hinterland, the place flourished and became an independent municipality in 1860 and a city in 1904. In 2001 the Moreton Shire was annexed to the city, in 2008 the LGA lost two places (Harrisville and Peak Crossing) to the Scenic Rim Region .

Ipswich City Council has eleven members. Ten Councilors are elected by the residents of the ten divisions (constituencies). The council chairman and mayor (mayor) is also elected by all residents of the city.
