Originally the suburb area was called One Mile because it was a mile from the main settlement. One Mile was originally a camp for ox drivers. A wooden hotel was later built there, but it was dismantled and put up again at another location. From 1853 the area was also called Leichhardt, because Ludwig Leichhardt is said to have set up camp there during his first expedition. The land was used for agriculture from 1871 and buildings were built on from the end of the 19th century. In 1925 the One Mile Park was laid out, which has been called Leichhardt Park since 1930 . In 1956 the suburb was officially renamed Leichhardt.
