John Braithwaite (criminologist)

John Braithwaite (born July 30, 1951 in Ipswich , Australia ) is an Australian criminologist and sociologist . He is one of the world's best-known representatives of scientific criminology . Braithwaite developed the concept of reintegrative shaming and is internationally recognized as a leading representative of restorative justice . In addition, he worked on industrial sociology and, together with Ian Ayres, developed a legal sociological regulation theory.

life and work

Braithwaite studied psychology , anthropology and sociology at the University of Queensland and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1977. PhD in Sociology . Since then he has been active in the academic teaching of criminology, including at New York University . Braithwaite is a professor of criminology at the Australian National University .

With his theory of reintegrative shaming , Braithwaite presented a general theory of crime in which he linked traditional sociological explanatory approaches (such as subculture theory, learning theory, control theory, and anomie theory ) with one another and with the labeling approach and also brought this into relation to the empirical results of developmental criminology . The central term in his theory is shaming. This creates an internal control in the individual that gives him the direction for socially acceptable behavior.

In the field of political theory and legal sociology, Braithwaite is known for his theory of "responsive law" (with Ian Ayres). With the development of globalized markets, he expanded this approach into a theory of regulative capitalism .

Braithwaite has received many awards for his scientific work. In 2004 he was the second non-American recipient to receive the Sutherland Prize of the American Society of Criminology . Also in 2004 he received the Grawemeyer Award together with Peter Drahos . In 2005 he was awarded the Prix ​​Emile Durkheim of the International Society of Criminology and in 2006 he was awarded the Stockholm Prize in Criminology . In 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven .
