2012 Le Mans 24 hour race

The 80th 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 80 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , took place from 16 to 17 June 2012 on the Circuit des 24 Heures . The race was the ranking of the 2012 World Endurance Championship .
The race
With the decision of the Peugeot board in spring 2012 to discontinue the sports car program with immediate effect, the race lost the great duel between Peugeot and Audi , which had shaped the event since 2007 . The Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 was never used in a race.
Audi's new opponent for overall victory was Toyota, returning from Le Mans with the Toyota TS030 . At the end of 2011, Toyota announced that it wanted to compete in endurance motorsport again and to build a prototype according to LMP1 regulations. While the chassis of the TS030 Hybrid was designed and manufactured by Toyota Motorsport GmbH based in Cologne , which was already responsible for Toyota's Formula 1 racing cars, the entire drivetrain was created in the Japanese Toyota development center in Higashi-Fuji. The body for the TS030 Hybrid was a monocoque made of carbon fiber composite material , which was provided with an aerodynamically efficient closed structure in coupé shape. The chassis has an independent wheel suspension with double wishbones on the front and rear axles . The suspension is implemented with torsion bar springs and, like the shock absorbers, is controlled via push rods. To a good delay to ensure internally ventilated are carbon-ceramic - disc brakes mounted. When choosing the internal combustion engine concept , it was decided to use a non-supercharged gasoline engine. Although an engine already existed that had already been used by the private Rebellion Racing team at Le Mans, Toyota decided to completely redesign it. Although the 3.4-liter V8 engine designed for the TS030 Hybrid has the same displacement as the customer's engine, which was also built as a V8, it has no further relationship to it and is 20 kg lighter. Audi came to Le Mans with two concepts and four vehicles, two R18 ultra and two R18 e-tron Quattro.
At the beginning of the race, the Toyotas were able to keep up surprisingly well and after three hours both 030 Hybrids were even in the lead for a short time. However, both cars failed. Anthony Davidson collided with the Mulsanne under braking Ferrari 458 Italia GTC of Piergiuseppe Perazzini . The Toyota took off, overturned in the air and crashed into the barrier at high speed. Davidson suffered from whiplash and was unable to race for the rest of the season. After the end of the following safety car phase , the second Toyota also crashed after a collision. In the end there was a clear one-two-three for Audi. The race was won by the Audi R18 e-tron quattro with drivers Marcel Fässler , André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer .

Start list
On February 2, 2012, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, as the organizer, published a first preliminary starting list with 56 participants plus nine reserve teams.
Reserve vehicles
As in previous years, the ACO published a list of reserve vehicles at the same time as the first preliminary start list. Five LMP and four GT teams were put on the list and were given the opportunity to replace those teams that were unable to take part in the race for a variety of reasons. The LMP reservists were only allowed to replace vehicles of the LMP1 and LMP2 class, just as the GT reservists were only allowed to replace GT vehicles. The advancement took place in the order of nomination.
