The Toyota TS030 Hybrid is a sports car prototype that was developed and built by Toyota according to LMP1 regulations . The eponymous hybrid drive consists of a V 8 - Otto engine and an electric motor .

Toyota took part in the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans with the TS030 Hybrid . It was the manufacturer's first appearance at the Sarthe since the GT-One was last used in 1999 and the subsequent alignment of the motorsport program to Formula 1 , in which Toyota Racing competed from 2002 to 2009.

development

At the end of 2011, Toyota announced that it wanted to compete in endurance motorsport again and to build a prototype according to LMP1 regulations. While the chassis of the TS030 Hybrid was designed and manufactured by Toyota Motorsport GmbH based in Cologne , which was already responsible for Toyota's Formula 1 racing cars, the entire drivetrain was created in the Japanese Toyota development center in Higashi-Fuji.

Body and chassis

As a chassis for the TS030 hybrid was a monocoque from carbon fiber reinforced plastic , which with an aerodynamically efficient closed coupe - structure was provided. The front and rear wheels are individually suspended on double wishbones . The suspension is implemented with torsion bar springs and, like the shock absorbers, is operated via push rods. To a good delay to ensure internally ventilated are carbon-ceramic - disc brakes mounted.

drive

The THS-R motor used in the TS030 Hybrid

When choosing the internal combustion engine concept , it was decided to use a non-supercharged gasoline engine. Although there was an engine that was already used by the private team Rebellion Racing at Le Mans, Toyota decided to develop a completely new one. Although the 3.4-liter V8 engine designed for the TS030 Hybrid has the same displacement as the customer's engine, which was also built as a V8, it has no further relationship to it and is 20 kg lighter.

The drive in the TS030 Hybrid was christened TOYOTA HYBRID System - Racing (THS-R). In contrast to conventional hybrid systems, the electrical energy recovered during braking is not stored in batteries with the THS-R , but in high-performance capacitors . The advantage lies in the higher power density of the capacitors , i.e. they can withstand higher currents than accumulators for a given capacity and they can withstand numerous charging cycles without noticeable loss of capacity. For reasons of weight distribution, the capacitors are installed near the vehicle's center of gravity in the interior on the right-hand side next to the driver's seat.

The engines are installed in front of the rear axle and combined with a transversely installed, sequential six-speed gearbox. During the development phase, the engineers considered two different versions of the hybrid system. A variant with an electric motor mounted in the front that drives the front wheels, while the combustion engine acts on the rear axle, and a concept in which both motors are installed in one unit and only the rear wheels are driven. A late adjustment of the regulations limited the use of the additional front-wheel drive to speeds higher than 120 km / h, whereas the additional power of the electric motor could still be used without restriction with pure rear-wheel drive . From Toyota's point of view, the advantages of all-wheel drive no longer existed and so the rear-wheel drive variant was finally implemented for the TS030 Hybrid.

In February 2013, Toyota released performance data for the TS030 Hybrid. Accordingly, the gasoline engine has an output of 395 kW (537 hp), while the automatically controlled hybrid system can deliver an additional 224 kW (305 hp).

Racing operations - factory

2012

After Toyota originally only wanted to take part in a few selected races in 2012, the company announced that it would participate in the 2012 season of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) from the second run, the 6-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps in May. However, an accident during test drives at the Paul Ricard Circuit in early April thwarted this plan. The monocoque chassis of the racing car was irreparably damaged, so that a new one had to be manufactured, which could not be done in the short time.

For the belated racing debut at Le Mans, two TS030 hybrids were finally ready, the red and white colors of which were originally kept in classic Toyota colors, but which were changed to blue and white. The Toyota with starting number 7 was driven by drivers Nicolas Lapierre , Kazuki Nakajima and Alexander Wurz , while the sister vehicle with the number 8 and drivers Sébastien Buemi , Anthony Davidson and Stéphane Sarrazin started. The remainder of the 2012 WEC season, however, only contested the TS030 Hybrid with starting number 7.

Le Mans

After a convincing qualifying , the two Toyotas were able to secure positions 3 and 5 on the starting grid, while their biggest competitor, Audi, started from positions 1, 2, 4 and 6. The race went well for Toyota until the events rolled over around five hours after the start of the race. While Lapierre was fighting for the lead with the Audi R18 e-tron quattro # 1 of Benoît Tréluyer after a race to catch up with his TS030 Hybrid at the front and finally won first place after several changes in leadership, the sister vehicle had a serious accident. When entering the Mulsanne curve at the end of the Hunaudières straight, the Ferrari driver Piergiuseppe Perazzini of the AF Corse racing team caused a collision with the TS030 Hybrid from Davidson as it was about to lap the slower Ferrari. The Toyota then took off, overturned, and hit the barrier at high speed. Right next to it, the Ferrari also crashed into the guardrails. While Perazzini was uninjured, Davidson complained of back pain after the accident, which later turned out to be a fracture of two vertebrae. The necessary repair and recovery work was followed by a long safety car phase , during which the remaining Toyota and the Audi R18 # 1 completed a pit stop with a driver change at the same time , which entailed another change in leadership due to the faster stop by the Audi team. About an hour and 15 minutes after the incident, the track was reopened for the race. After the safety car phase, the traffic built up and when trying to follow Marcel Fässler in the Audi # 1 , who was driving directly in front of him , the TS030 driver Nakajima overlooked the Nissan DeltaWing in the Porsche corners. Both vehicles collided, whereupon the DeltaWing hit the road barrier hard and the Toyota had to go to the pits with a punctured tire and a destroyed rear end. This accident resulted in a number of problems and long repairs in the pits, which resulted in a massive loss of time. Finally, after around ten and a half hours, engine failure put an end to the Toyota team's efforts at Le Mans.

Silverstone

The modified aerodynamics package with a wider rear wing

As planned, Toyota Racing entered Silverstone with just one vehicle . For this race, the TS030 Hybrid was equipped with an adapted aerodynamic package for additional contact pressure, in which the rear wing was widened by 20 cm using end plates. The rear now measures 200 cm instead of the maximum wing width of 180 cm permitted in the regulations, but the additional aerodynamic elements between the wing and the end plate due to their attachment to the side pods are part of the body and therefore comply with the rules.

Third place on the grid behind two Audi R18s was achieved in qualifying. In the race, Toyota was able to make up one place immediately after the start and finally take the lead on the eleventh lap. Due to the higher consumption of the TS030 Hybrid, it had to pit earlier than the two R18s, so that the lead in the course of the race - due to the staggered pit stops - constantly switched between Audi and Toyota. In addition, one more fuel stop was necessary for the Toyota than for the two Audis. After a race without incident, the TS030 Hybrid finished in second place.

São Paulo

After the Toyota team had already achieved good times in training, this trend continued in qualifying. With the fastest lap, Wurz secured pole position for the TS030 for the first time . During the race, Toyota Racing held the lead and set the pace. Due to the improved fuel efficiency of the TS030 Hybrid, the difference in range to Audi between refueling stops was no longer as striking as it was at Silverstone. Ultimately, the Toyota drivers were able to achieve a victory with a one-minute lead over the runner-up, which is also the first ever victory for Toyota in the WEC.

Bahrain

Already in practice the two Audi R18 e-tron quattro were faster than the TS030, which did not change in qualifying and the Toyota therefore started the race from third on the grid. In the race, however, the Toyota's performance improved significantly. Right after the start, Wurz secured second place, after seven laps he took the lead and was able to continuously expand his lead. After around two hours of racing, the TS030 was easily in first place, but a defect in the start number lighting meant that the race management ordered a repair. This lasted seven minutes, threw the Toyota back to sixth and destroyed all chances of victory. Lapierre was able to fight his way back to third place in the further course of the race, but dropped out about an hour before the end of the race with a broken wheel suspension after a collision with a vehicle to be lapped.

Fuji

The driver trio Lapierre , Nakajima and Wurz celebrated their second win of the season in Fuji

In qualifying, Nakajima was able to prevail against the competing Audi and thus secure the second pole position for Toyota in the WEC. In the race, the Toyota team initially defended the lead and only lost it to Audi in the meantime. An additional refueling stop for the TS030 was due around 20 minutes before the end of the race, which reduced the gap to the pursuers even further. Ultimately, Toyota Racing secured victory at Fuji with around eleven seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Shanghai

In the season finale, the Toyota team achieved good lap times in practice sessions, which was also reflected in the qualifying with the pole position. In the race itself, the TS030, which is superior to the Audi R18 in terms of speed, quickly gained a large lead, which, as in previous races, was necessary to compensate for the poorer efficiency of the Toyota petrol engine with an additional refueling stop. With the third win of the season, Toyota finished the race with a one-minute lead over the closest pursuer.

2013

The Toyota TS030 Hybrid at the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours

Toyota Racing will take part in the entire 2013 WEC season and the 2013 Le Mans 24-hour race with two vehicles that will be driven by the same drivers as in the previous year. The TS030 was consistently further developed for the 2013 season in order to eliminate the weaknesses of the previous year's model. The powertrain saw changes in performance, efficiency and reliability. Since the model of the 2012 season was actually a test vehicle, there was still space for the hybrid system on the front axle, as the decision to transfer the additional power to the rear wheels was made relatively late. This made it possible to improve the aerodynamics at the front of the 2013 TS030 by pulling the nose lower and removing unnecessary air inlets.

Silverstone

In the first race of the season, the cars with the previous year's specifications were used. In qualifying in changeable weather conditions, the two Toyotas secured pole position and second place on the grid. In the race, however, the TS030s were pushed to third and fourth place by the two Audi R18 e-tron quattro just a few minutes after the start , where they finally reached the finish line.

Spa Francorchamps

In Belgium, the 2013 model of the TS030 with starting number 7 was used for the first time, whereas number 8 was a model from the previous year. In qualifying, the Toyotas could not keep up with the three Audis, which is why the race started from positions 4 and 5. The performance in the race was much better, however, so that the 2013 TS030 was able to compete for victory and also take the lead at times. After about four hours, a defect occurred in the hybrid system on # 7, which meant that no more energy was stored. As a result, the rear brakes overheated due to a lack of braking effect, which forced the Toyota team to take the new TS030 out of the race. The previous year's model was able to finish the race, but, like at Silverstone, was unable to keep up with the newer Audis and finally crossed the finish line in fourth place.

Le Mans

Two 2013 TS030s were used for the season highlight in Le Mans. Once again, both Toyotas were inferior to the Audis in qualifying, so the race started from positions four and five. The course of the race was marked by very changeable weather and many safety car phases and overshadowed by the death of Allan Simonsen , who had an accident shortly after the start of the race and later succumbed to his injuries. In the first few minutes of the race, both TS030s were able to make up several positions and fight for the lead until the first safety car phase began after Simonsen's accident. At this point the two Toyota were in second and third place. About an hour later, the safety car phase was over, whereupon there were several changes in leadership and position in the leading group between Audi and Toyota in the following hours. At around 5:30 p.m. the Toyota # 7 rolled out on the track with fuel pressure problems, but was able to continue shortly afterwards. Around 10 p.m. the Audi # 3 lost a lot of time due to a tire damage and the Audi # 1 due to a technical defect and subsequent repairs in the pits, which is why the Toyota # 8 moved up to 2nd place and the Toyota # 7 to 3rd place. Until the end of the race, the TS030 # 8 was always within striking distance of the leading Audi, while the Toyota # 7 fought a lengthy battle for 3rd place with several changes of position with the Audi # 3 approaching from behind. Around an hour and 15 minutes before the end of the race, the strongest shower of the weekend set in, causing Lapierre to slide off the track in fourth place in the Porsche corners and hit the tire wall at high speed. Lapierre initially left his TS030, but was able to get back in after the car was recovered and return to the pits at slow speed. The severe damage to the bodywork and suspension was repaired within 30 minutes and the race could continue without losing 4th place. After a race without defects, the TS030 # 8 crossed the finish line in 2nd place one lap behind the victorious Audi # 2. The TS030 # 7 finished the race in fourth place, seven laps behind the first place.

São Paulo

In the run-up to the fourth round of the season in Brazil, a new aerodynamic package for increased downforce was developed and installed for the 2013 model of the TS030.

Toyota Racing entered São Paulo with just one TS030 and started the race from third place on the grid. Just 35 minutes after the start of the race, Sarrazin collided with Dominik Kraihamer's LMP2 lotus , who lost control of his vehicle at the moment when Sarrazin tried to lap the outside of the bend in the Senna-S. As a result, both vehicles hit the barrier, whereupon Sarrazin tried to bring the TS030 back to the pits for repair. However, the vehicle was too badly damaged and the team was forced to withdraw from the race.

Austin

For the first appearance of the WEC in the USA, Toyota Racing competed again with only one vehicle. The Toyota team could not keep up with the two Audis in practice and qualifying, which is why they started from third place. Even during the race, the Audis were always faster, but the Toyota team used a different tactic to fight for the lead. From the start of the race, the TS030 completed two stints with one set of tires, which saved a lot of time. The decision about victory was made after the last pit stop, as the Toyota team still had to change drivers. Toyota Racing finally finished the race in 2nd place, 23.6 seconds behind the leading Audi.

Fuji

For the first time since Le Mans, two vehicles were used in Toyota's home race. In the two previous races, the TS030 # 7 did not go into action because capacities were required for the development of the successor vehicle, the TS040 Hybrid .

In qualifying, both Toyotas were able to keep up with the Audis and secured positions 2 and 3 for the race. The race started behind the safety car due to heavy rain and was interrupted after only 8 laps. During this time, the leading Audi had to visit the pits several times due to technical problems, so that the # 7 Toyota took the lead. However, the TS030 # 8 also had to go to the pits to refuel, which is why it fell far behind. After the race was interrupted for two hours, the car was restarted behind the safety car. Since the weather conditions did not improve, the race was finally stopped after 16 laps behind the safety car and the # 7 Toyota team declared the winner. Half points were awarded for the event in the championship standings.
