1000 km race from Spa-Francorchamps
The 1000 km race of Spa-Francorchamps is a long-distance or sports car race on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
The event
The Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race, which was first held in 1924, was supplemented in 1963 by a 500 km race, which was part of the World Sports Car Championship. Since 1966 the distance has been 1000 km, as in the races at the Nürburgring and in Monza . The races on the very fast 14 km route were stopped in 1975, the shortened 7 km variant was opened from 1979 and the 1000 km race was held again from 1982, now according to group C rules. From 1989, new rules reduced the distance to 480 km before all sports car races were stopped. The classic in the Ardennes has been back in the range since 2003. Initially in a joint race of the British GT Championship and the FIA Sportscar Challenge, it was added to the racing calendar of the newly founded Le Mans Endurance Series in 2004 . Since then, the championship run has been an integral part of the ACO's endurance racing series . The most successful vehicle in the 1000 km race with four overall victories is the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP with diesel engine . Most recently, in 2010, the car won the shortest 1000 km run since it was started again in 2004. Due to several safety car phases, a race interruption after a power failure and the onset of rain towards the end of the race, the time completed up to then exceeded the 6-hour mark and led thus according to the rules of the Le Mans Series at an early end of the race. With the 2011 season, the race was converted to a 6-hour race, but still kept the distance of 1000 km in the name. In 2011 both the Le Mans Series and the still young Intercontinental Le Mans Cup started together and with 54 participants made up the largest field since the resumption in 2003.
