Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race 1924
The first 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps , also the Belgian Touring Car Grand Prix, 24 heures de Spa , took place on July 20 and 21, 1924.
The race
One year after the first 24-hour race at Le Mans , which was held for the first time in 1923 , officials of the Royal Automobile Club Belgium took up the idea of a 24-hour race and looked for a suitable venue. The driving forces within the club were Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem. The decision was made to hold the race on a 14.863 km long course on public roads between Francorchamps , Malmedy and Stavelot , where races have been held since 1922 and which would go down in motorsport history as the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps .
27 vehicles in four racing classes were registered, 26 of which started the race on the afternoon of June 19th. The overall standings were won by the French Henri Springuel and Maurice Béquet in a 2-liter Bignan , ahead of the Le Mans winner from 1923, André Lagache and his teammates André Pisart in a factory Chenard & Walcker and the Belgian Raymond de Tornaco , who shared another bignan with Barthélémy Bruyère .
