Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race 1964

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 16th Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race , also known as the 24-hour Spa-Francorchamps , took place from July 25th to 26th, 1964 on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps .

The race

Just one year after the first 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1923 , a 24-hour race was held in Spa for the first time in 1924 . After the Second World War , the race was held only twice, in 1948 and 1953 . After the race in 1953 there was a break of eleven years before a 24-hour race was announced again in 1964, this time for touring cars and on the 14.10 km circuit.

Vehicles between 0.85 and 3 liters of displacement were permitted. The fastest in training was the Briton John Whitmore , who shared the cockpit of a Ford Lotus Cortina with Frank Gardner . The duo also led the first few hours of the race, then a defective clutch forced them to give up. Then Eugen Böhringer and Dieter Glemser took the lead in the Mercedes-Benz 300SE. The German team were later disqualified for using outside help. Despite some problems with the gearbox, another Mercedes team led the race from midnight with drivers Robert Crevits and Taf Gosselin , who ultimately won it.

Which was overshadowed endurance race of the death of Italian Piero Frescobaldi , the evening at 10 o'clock in the stretch Malmedy in a serious accident with his Lancia Flavia Sport Zagato was killed.
