Frank Gardner (born October 1, 1930 in Sydney , † August 29, 2009 in Gold Coast ) was an Australian racing driver .

Career

The Porsche 917 from Gardner / Piper at the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1969

Frank Gardner began his career as a motorcyclist in dirt track races in Bathurst and became known as a Formula 1 , touring and sports car racer in the 1960s . When the Porsche works drivers refused to start with the new Porsche 917 in the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1969 , Gardner and David Piper stepped in and dared to bring the Porsche, which was almost inaccessible at the time (only changes to the chassis made the 917 a top car) to seventh place in the overall ranking. Gardner won the British Touring Car Championship three times . In 1967 and 1968 he drove for Ford and in 1973 for Chevrolet .

In 1971 he won the European Formula 5000 Championship and was Australian touring car champion in 1977.

His career in the automobile world championship was less successful. Between 1964 and 1968 he sporadically drove eight races to the world championship in a Brabham , but never placed in the points.
