Monza 1000 km race in 1965
The fourth 1000 km race of Monza , also 1000 km di Monza, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 25, 1965 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the fifth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
In almost all publications, the 1965 Monza 1000 km race is considered the first long-distance race on the traditional Monza circuit. In fact, this event was the fourth of its kind. As early as 1954, 1955 and 1956, 1000 km races were held in Monza. Officially these races were called Supercortemaggiore and were organized by the state-owned Italian lottery company.
In 1965 the race was driven on the track including the banked turns. The Ford GT40s used by Carroll Shelby were the only serious opponents of Scuderia Ferrari in the race for overall victory. At the finish line, the fastest Ford, driven by Bruce McLaren and Ken Miles , missed four laps on the winning Ferrari 275P2 driven by Mike Parkes and Jean Guichet .
The race was overshadowed by the death of the Swiss Tommy Spychiger . On the 32nd lap, after the first refueling stop, he took over the Ferrari 365P2 from his compatriot Herbert Müller . In his first fast lap he drove straight ahead in the Parabolica with no apparent braking effect. The car overturned over an earth wall and burned out completely in the forest behind the racetrack. Spychiger succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene of the accident. After the fatal consequences of the accident became known, the Scuderia Filipinetti (the Swiss competed for this racing team) withdrew the two remaining vehicles from the race.
