Monza 1000 km race in 1984
The 25th 1000 km race of Monza , also Trofeo Filippo Caracciolo, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 23, 1984 at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza and was the first race of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
The first sports car world championship run of the season came to a turbulent end. In the run-up there were endless discussions between the FIA and those responsible at the IMSA about the harmonization of the various technical regulations. One consequence of the discussions was the raising of the minimum weight of the C1-class racing cars to 850 kg without fuel or driver. This measure undermined the work of Porsche and Lancia , who adapted the works cars and made them lighter during the winter break. The factory Porsche 956 weighed only 810 kg due to improvements to the chassis and body - among other things, there were new mountings made of titanium . The factory Lancia L2-84 835 kg. Ballast therefore had to be carried along, which at Porsche was in the footwell of the emergency seat. Immediately after the race, two cars fell below the weight limit. The second-placed Porsche 956 from Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass was two kg too light when weighed after the race. The third-placed Lancia of Paolo Barilla and Mauro Baldi was six kg below the permitted limit. Both vehicles were disqualified by the race management, which led to violent protests, especially from Porsche race director Peter Falk . He accused the technical delegates of the FIA with sloppy measurement methods because the Porsche weighed 855 kg after qualifying with empty tanks. The protest was dealt with in early summer. Since the scales lacked an up-to-date inspection certificate, both cars were included in the evaluation.
Until halfway through the race, the spectators saw an exciting race in which the lead changed several times and the two works Lancia were able to drive the pace of the Porsche 956. Problems at Lancia decided the race. Riccardo Patrese lost the lead because the brake pads first had to be replaced and then he overbraked the car on his first lap after the stop and had an accident. In the following repair, he lost eleven laps on the pits. The car finally broke down in the further course of the race after an engine fire. In the second Lancia from Barilla and Baldi, the engine could no longer be started after a scheduled refueling stop. The installation of a new battery cost five racing laps. In the second half, the two works Porsches dominated the race, clinching a one-two victory with a gap of 23 seconds - with Stefan Bellof and Derek Bell in the victorious 956.
