The International Motor Sports Association ( IMSA ; German " International Motor Sports Association ") is an American automobile sports organization based in Braselton , Georgia . The IMSA was founded in 1969 by John Bishop, a former employee of the SCCA ( Sports Car Club of America ) and the founder of NASCAR , Bill France senior .

history

The Sikorsky -Staff John Bishop began in the 1950s with motor racing and got to know the SCCA official Dave Allen. Allen offered Bishop a leadership position in an SCCA Committee on Bishop accepted and moved to Westport ( Connecticut ).

Bishop defined technical regulations at the SCCA, organized championships and was responsible for creating the club magazines and event programs. In 1969 John Bishop resigned after internal disputes and left the SCCA.

In 1948 Bill France senior already had a professional oval track series, the NASCAR, and wanted to establish such a series for road races as well. After talks with Bishop, the IMSA was officially launched in 1969. France gave Bishop sole control of the organization, although France held 75% and Bishop 25% of the shares.

In October 1969, the IMSA organized the first race, an event with Formula Vau and Formula Ford vehicles on the Pocono Raceway . January 1989 Bishop sold his company shares.
