1956 Monza 1000 km race

Arthur Rosenhammer contested one of his few races outside of the GDR: he retired after 55 laps due to gearbox damage

The third 1000 km race of Monza , also IV Gran Premio Supercortemaggiore - La 1000 km. di Monza, Autodromo di Monza , took place on June 24, 1956 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza . The race was not part of any racing series.

The race

In almost all publications, the 1965 Monza 1000 km race is considered the first long-distance race on the traditional Monza circuit. In fact, this event was the fourth of its kind. As early as 1954, 1955 and 1956, 1000 km races were held in Monza. Officially these races were called Supercortemaggiore and were organized by the state-owned Italian lottery company. In Italy , the 6 out of 90 lottery form was and is popular across the country. With part of the betting income, the sport was promoted until the 1980s. The youngsters in motorsport - organizers, drivers and teams - also received generous support. Many later top Italian drivers, some of whom even made it to the top single-posto class , Formula 1 , owed their entry into professional sport to the state lottery.

In the 1950s, the 1000 km race even supported its own racing event. The high prize money was particularly attractive for the teams and drivers. After the success of Mike Hawthorn and Umberto Maglioli in the factory - Ferrari 735S in 1954 and the overall victory of Maserati in 1955 with the crew of Jean Behra and Luigi Musso in the 300S , the number of participants rose to 66 teams in 1956, of which 41 finally entered the race.

Only two racing classes were allowed; Sports cars up to 2 or 1.5 liter displacement. The Maserati works team provided the largest contingent of vehicles with six sports cars - 200S and 150S . Ferrari relied on the 2-liter sports cars 500TR and 500 Mondial . The 1000 km race was one of the few international racing events in which the East German state racing collective took part. Two AWE 1500RS were registered for Edgar Barth , Arthur Rosenhammer , Paul Thiel and Egon Binner; whereby the Thiel / Binner team could not qualify for the race.

The 10 km long route including the banked bends was driven, which led to average speeds of over 200 km / h. The race turned into the expected duel between the works cars from Ferrari and Maserati, which Scuderia Ferrari narrowly won. After a driving time of 5: 07: 13.900 hours, Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins won by 27 seconds over the Maserati of Cesare Perdisa and Stirling Moss .
