Mennato Boffa (born December 23, 1929 in Benevento , † September 28, 1996 in Naples ) was an Italian racing driver .

Racing career

Mennato Boffa's interest in motorsport was aroused by his father, who took the eight-year-old with him to the Coppa Principesa di Piemonte in Posillipo in 1937 . Father and son watched as spectators the victories of Giuseppe Farina and Carlo Felice in an Alfa Romeo 12C . Boffa drove his first own race in 1953 from Catania to Mount Etna . Although the emergency vehicle to be everyday car, a Fiat 1100R was, he achieved a class victory in the hill climb . With the support of the father of the later Lancia and Ferrari racing director Cesare Fiorio , he came to better vehicles in the mid-1950s. He started at the Targa Florio for the first time and finished second in the Gran Premio di Napoli in 1957 and 1959 . In 1960 he won this race.

At the beginning of the 1960s he was one of the most successful Italian sports car drivers . He won in 1960, 1961 and 1964 the overall standings of the Italian Sports Car Championship and ended the the World Sportscar Championship in 1961 scoring four-hour race at Pescara third overall.

Mennato Boffa was registered in 1961 in four Formula 1 races without world championship status and the Italian Grand Prix . In no race he could classify with his Cooper T45 . With the end of the 1964 season, he ended his driving career. In 1979 he made a comeback at the age of 50, which came to an end after a few appearances in September 1980.
