championship
The 1959 World Sports Car Championship was not decided until the last race, the RAC Tourist Trophy in Goodwood . Should the Aston Martin team win the race, a Scuderia Ferrari vehicle would have to finish second in order for Ferrari to successfully defend the title. Carroll Shelby , Jack Fairman and Stirling Moss won for Aston Martin, and Ferrari missed the title by 2 seconds. That was the deficit that Tony Brooks had on the second-placed Porsche driver Wolfgang von Trips .
It was the third overall victory for Aston Martin this year, after the successes at the Nürburgring and at Le Mans . At the season opening in Sebring , Dan Gurney and Chuck Daigh had remained victorious for Ferrari.
The Porsche Team celebrated a historic success at the Targa Florio . It was the first overall victory for the German sports car manufacturer in a race in the sports car world championship.
