championship
The 1972 World Championship was dominated by Scuderia Ferrari . With the now mature 312PB and a large squad of drivers, the Italian racing team won the overall standings ten times out of eleven races this season. Ronnie Peterson , Tim Schenken , Clay Regazzoni , Brian Redman , Jacky Ickx , Mario Andretti , Arturo Merzario , Sandro Munari , Carlos Pace and Helmut Marko competed in sports car races for the Scuderia this year .
When 24-hour race at Le Mans , the Scuderia decided not to participate because the team management feared the 312PB would the 24-hour distance not last. As a result, Matra Sports celebrated a double victory with the MS670 . Henri Pescarolo and Graham Hill won ahead of teammates François Cevert and Howden Ganley . This success makes Graham Hill the only driver in motorsport history to win the Monaco Grand Prix , the Indianapolis 500 mile and the Le Mans 24 Hours .
For Ferrari it was the first sports car world championship title since 1967 .
