The 1992 World Sports Car Championship was the 40th and final season of this championship. It started on January 26th and ended on October 18, 1992.

championship

In 1992 the sports car world championship was at a low point. As early as 1991, the series suffered from a lack of participants, so that those responsible for the FIA originally did not want to hold a World Cup in 1992. After several urges from the board of the French car manufacturer Peugeot , the FIA gave in. The Peugeot 905 was presented in 1990 under the chairmanship of Jean Boillot . The aim of the project, which will run for several years, was not only to win the Le Mans 24-hour race, but also to win the World Sports Car Championship. After being beaten by Jaguar in 1991 , success was to follow in 1992. A cancellation of the championship would have meant a considerable financial loss for Peugeot in living out the title, as the group's marketing activities were based on success in motorsport. When Peugeot made an effort to get involved with other manufacturers, the FIA changed its mind.

The end of the championship began with the 1989 World Sports Car Championship . Both the sporting and technical regulations of Group C were affected by the changes . For the 1989 season, the FIA reduced the minimum distance of the previous long-distance races from 1,000 to 480 kilometers, then in 1991 to 430 kilometers. Also in 1989 the previous principle of a consumption formula was abandoned. Instead, Group C vehicles should from now on be powered by 3.5-liter naturally aspirated engines. This corresponded to the status of Formula 1 at the time , in which turbo engines were banned from 1989. Group C2 was omitted without replacement. Engine manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz gave up their involvement in sports car racing and instead supplied Formula 1 teams with engines. For private teams, a successful participation in the sports car world championship was no longer financially viable against the background that de facto Formula 1 technology had to be used. It is sometimes speculated that the FIA deliberately made Group C unattractive through its changes to the regulations at the beginning of the 1990s, since it has become an overpowering competition in terms of audience and media favor compared to the Formula 1 World Championship (also organized by the FIA) be.

Jaguar had withdrawn at the end of the 1991 season, but gave XJR-14 chassis to Mazdaspeed. There was from the chassis of the Mazda MXR-01 with a V10 - Judd engine . Mazda offered this vehicle to private teams. At Sauber , after problems with the engine, the development of the Mercedes-Benz C292 was abandoned, so that in addition to the Peugeot, only the Toyota TS010 remained as a works car. Many other projects, such as the BRM P351 , remained piecemeal.

Of the 10 racing events initially planned, only six were held. Points for the first ten were awarded as follows: 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1. Teams that had registered several vehicles only received points for the best placed. In addition, the respective car had to be registered for all world championship races. Drivers only received points if the car had covered at least 90% of the distance of the winning team and they were behind the wheel for at least 30% of the race distance.

Peugeot won the brands' championship with superiority, Yannick Dalmas and Derek Warwick became world champions.
