Sports car world championship 1989

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1989 World Sports Car Championship was the 37th season of this championship. It started on April 9th and ended on October 29th.

championship

With the start of the season, the long tradition of long-distance races in the world championship , which had a race distance of 1000 kilometers or six hours, ended. Sprint races over 480 kilometers and a driving time between two and three hours were now driven. These new regulations led to the ACO not taking part in the world championship. As a result, the Le Mans 24-hour race was not part of the racing calendar this year.

In 1989 the Sauber team with the Sauber C9 was the dominant racing team. The car was powered by the M-199 - V8 engine from Mercedes-Benz . It was the first world championship title for Daimler-Benz AG since 1955, when both the drivers' championship of the automobile world championship and the sports car world championship were won. Sauber was victorious in seven of the eight world championship races and won the team standings with great ease. The surprise of the year was Joest Racing , who were successful with the aging Porsche 926C . With their success at the 480 km race in Dijon, Bob Wollek and Frank Jelinski achieved the last overall victory for a Porsche racing car in the long history of the World Sports Car Championship.

Jean-Louis Schlesser became world driver champion ahead of his Sauber team-mates Jochen Mass , Mauro Baldi and Kenny Acheson .
