The Nissan R88C is a sports car prototype of the group C , which was prepared 1988th This is not a new development, rather the March chassis from the predecessors R86V and R87E was modified and equipped with a new engine. 4 vehicles of this series were produced.
The R88C was used in the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship (JSPC), the Le Mans 24-hour race and, for a short time, in the World Sports Prototype Championship (WSPC).
development
The well-known aluminum monocoque chassis of two R86Vs and two R87E, which originally came from March, served as the basis. It was adapted by Nismo to the new 3.0-liter V8 engine (VRH30) with twin -turbo charging , which was supposed to replace the V8 of the same displacement previously used and known as the VEJ30. The VRH30 engine emerged from its predecessor and only differed mechanically from it by a different crankshaft . In addition, the wheelbase was lengthened and a more aerodynamically refined body was attached, which was newly developed by Nismo.
Races
1988
In the JSPC Masahiro Hasemi achieved a 3rd place in the first and fifth runs. At the end of the championship, Hasemi took 11th place overall, which was also the best result for Nissan.
In the 1988 Le Mans 24-hour race , the Nissan works team took to the starting line with two R88Cs, which secured positions 15 and 23 in qualifying. However, only one car came to the finish line and finished in 14th place. The second vehicle broke down after 21 hours with engine failure.
1989
In the JSPC, a 3rd place was achieved in the second run in Fuji . After this race, the new R89C model started as a replacement for the R88C.
In 1989 the R88C was used for the first time in the WSPC. In the first run it was enough for a 4th place, after which it was replaced by its successor.
