The Nissan P12 was the third generation of mid-range cars offered by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan under the sales name Nissan Primera in Europe. The model was introduced in June 2002 and stood out from its competitors primarily through its bold design and innovative operating concepts.
Nevertheless, the sales figures clearly fell short of expectations, especially with regard to its successful predecessor P11 , so that production was stopped in spring 2007 after almost five years without a successor.
Body and design
The Primera P12 was available as a four-door notchback sedan , a five-door hatchback and an equally five-door station wagon . As with its predecessor, the latter was marketed under the additional name Traveler .
The body was a completely new design. Its shape was based on the Fusion design study from the year 2000. Under the direction of the Swiss designer Stéphane Schwarz , an attempt was made to create the “typical” threefold structure of a notchback limousine with a low front end and rear end with a higher-rise passenger compartment through the most fluid possible Conceal transitions.
The series model was very much based on this study. This line was continued with the five-door model and also with the estate variant, which has a comparatively flat and strongly curved rear window. Significant differences compared to the study were only visible on the front of the car and the interior design.
Operating concept
Another special feature of the P12 was the standard N-FORM (originally Easy Control System ) operating concept , which provided for audio and air conditioning via a centrally located control panel with a color screen and a joystick- like control lever. The two higher-quality equipment lines also included a reversing camera above the rear license plate, which provided images from the rear of the car to the screen in the dashboard when reverse gear was engaged. This camera served as a key selling point in marketing.
Motorization
The Primera P12 was available from mid-2002 with three petrol and three different diesel engines with an output of between 109 and 140 hp. The initially only available diesel engine 2.2 di with 126 hp and direct injection was replaced in the spring of 2003 by two different common rail diesels from Renault and Nissan. However, these engines only met the Euro 3 emissions standard and were therefore taken out of the range in spring 2006 without replacement due to lack of demand. Equipping the engines with soot particle filters otherwise required to meet the higher Euro 4 emissions standard would have been too expensive.
The petrol engines were available with five-speed manual transmission and two different automatic transmissions. There was a manual six-speed gearbox for the diesel engines. In the case of diesel engines, there was a recall campaign in October 2005 due to faulty engine control units and boost pressure sensors.

Equipment variants
The P12 was also available in three different equipment lines. The comparatively rich basic equipment visia included, among other things, four electric windows and six airbags . The acenta equipment included some additional comfort functions such as cruise control and rain sensor . The highest equipment line tekna also included xenon headlights , a navigation system and a higher-quality audio system .
In addition to these three main equipment lines, there were also the special models visia-plus and acenta-plus with additional equipment at times .
From the middle of 2002 the laser adaptive cruise control was available as an option on the Primera, but only on the “Tekna” version with the 2-liter engine (103 kW / 140 PS) and the 6-speed CVT automatic with Tiptronic. At the time, it was the only mid-range car in Germany that could be equipped with this technology.
Reviews
The shape of the P12 caused a sensation. In 2002 he received the red dot award . The design was also described as "courageous" in the trade press. The N-Form operating concept also received positive reviews. According to the press, this was above all "easy" to use and "better than BMW's iDrive ".
In addition to the comparatively confusing body, the performance of the P12 was given negative ratings. Low-torque and not exactly economical engines, inharmonious suspension and the hacky gearshift were criticized. Overall, "behind the beautiful design ... just an average car" was hidden.
Lack of demand
Apparently in response to the unexpectedly low customer demand, the P12 was revised in July 2004, two years after the start of production. Above all, the equipment and the interior were upgraded. For example, the images from the reversing camera were now in color instead of black and white and there were new instruments, panels and upholstery.
Even this measure did not seem to have the desired effect. Production and sales of the P12 series were discontinued in spring 2007. Since then, Nissan has no longer offered a conventional mid- range car in Europe . A successor is not planned.
