iDrive is the operating concept of the infotainment system from BMW . It is based on the multimedia system of the (former) CAA AG. With the takeover of CAA AG by Harman Becker , the know-how passed to Harman Becker. Harman Becker developed the system further and now supplies it as a premium supplier to BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. It has a large LC display in the middle of the dashboard and is mainly controlled by a single button - the so-called iDrive controller - and several quick selection buttons. iDrive should integrate all comfort functions (especially navigation, telecommunication, audio and suspension settings) and thus greatly reduce the number of control buttons and controls. With a simultaneous increase in the variety of functions, this is intended to facilitate vehicle operation.

The current iDrive has an 8.8 inch display in all series of Navigation Professional (exception: 7 series with 10.25 inches and a resolution of 1440 × 540 pixels as well as 6 series , 5 series and 5 series GT with 10 , 2 inches) with a resolution of 1280 × 480 pixels. The 3D map data are stored on a hard drive , which also serves as a memory for MP3 music data. A DVD drive is used, among other things, to update data and can also play video DVDs and audio CDs . USB data carriers as well as cell phones and iPod devices can be connected to the on-board computer via an optional USB interface . Some mobile phones can be connected to the vehicle's external antenna in a charging cradle (snap-in adapter) specially made for the respective phone model using an antenna coupler or antenna connection.

Via the optional online connection BMW ConnectedDrive , iDrive can be supplied with a wide range of telematics and assistance services. In addition to e-mails, news and weather data, this also includes the service of the “BMW Assist” telephone information service, which provides research and other services and can transmit navigation data directly to the on-board computer. Routes can be planned in advance via an internet portal and sent to the car.

It is also possible to surf the Internet using an integrated NetFront- based web browser .
