BMW 5 Series

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BMW 5 Series is an upper middle class model series from the manufacturer BMW . It has been available since the summer of 1972 and is the successor to the " New Class ". Since the summer of 1991 there is also a combi - variant (company name Touring ).

The designation of the BMW 5 Series stood for a reorganization within the BMW program, and the 5 Series was the first model within this model classification , which goes back to the then BMW Marketing Director Bob A. Lutz . This type of model name ( 3 , 5, 7 ) was later transferred to the entire portfolio . Mercedes and Audi later followed a similar organizational logic with comparable vehicle names ( E-Class , Audi A6 ). Competitors on the market in the BMW 5 Series vehicle class include, for example, the model versions of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Audi A6, the Lexus GS , the Volvo S90, the Jaguar XF and the Škoda Superb .

From September 2009 to September 2017, a hatchback variant called GranTurismo was also available, which, with parts of the BMW 7 Series, was already included in the luxury class. The successor was presented as the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo in autumn 2017.
