The BMW 335 is a car that BMW built between 1939 and 1941, and the largest, most powerful car that BMW offered in the pre-war period.

history

development

The success of the BMW 326 introduced in 1936 encouraged the manufacturer to produce a larger model with a similar character.

The BMW 337 , which was larger than the 326 and 335, was under development at the end of the 1930s ; this should have received a reinforced chassis and the chassis of the 335 and its engine lengthened by 136 millimeters. With a modern Pullman body , this would have been BMW's entry into the luxury class; Due to the Second World War, however, the 337 was no longer produced in series.

marketing

In the first year of production in 1939, the sedan was priced at RM 7,850, the two-door convertible cost RM 9,050 - the BMW 326 cost only RM 5,500 in comparison.

A few months after the start of production, the Second World War began, which prevented this car from spreading further. It continued to be built until 1941. A total of only 410 cars of this model were produced, so that the 335 is one of the rarities today.

technology

The BMW 335 was not a completely new design, but was largely based on the BMW 326 . However, the wheelbase and front end have been lengthened to accommodate the larger engine and the entire mechanics have been adapted to the higher performance of the BMW 335 .

engine

The six-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 3485 cm³ was designed with a long stroke ( bore 82 mm, stroke 110 mm) and had a four- bearing crankshaft . A spur gear with a low-noise (helical-toothed) Novotex gear wheel drove the camshaft . This operated the overhead valves via bumpers and rocker arms . With an output of 90 hp (66 kW) at 3500 rpm, the car was up to 145 km / h, which was above average for the standards of its time. The updraft - carburetor , a Solex - twin carburettor type MMOVS, had an automatic starting device which is activated via a button on the dashboard. Approx. every 50 km the foot lever of the central lubrication had to be operated to supply the chassis with oil. The rear wheels were driven via the single-disc dry clutch and the fully synchronized four-speed gearbox . The four drum brakes (ø 280 mm) were operated hydraulically.

The 65 liter fuel tank allowed a range of more than 450 kilometers at a constant speed of 97 km / h and a standard consumption of 13.8 liters / 100 km.

While the two-liter six-cylinder of the 326 was used in both the East German EMW 340 and the West German BMW 501 after the war , the engine of the 335 was not re-launched. BMW chose the new BMW 502 in 1954 with a newly designed eight-cylinder - V engine equip.

Chassis and body

The box frame was welded to the base. There were three body styles: the four-door sedan and two-door and four-door convertibles.
