The M6 made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in spring 2005. The convertible, whose official world premiere took place at the British International Motor Show in London , followed in July 2006.

The BMW M6 has a 373 kW V10 engine . The rated output is achieved at 7750 rpm, with the maximum torque of 520 Nm at 6100 rpm . In the test by sport auto magazine , the M6 Coupé sprinted from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.2 seconds with Launch Control (factory specification 4.6 seconds). It takes 12.8 seconds from 0 to 200 km / h. The maximum speed is - as standard - limited to 250 km / h. For an extra charge of around € 2350, the top speed was increased to 305 km / h, including a BMW driver training course on a racetrack. The M6 reaches a top speed of up to 318 km / h without any electronic limitation. The ten-cylinder engine, like the BMW S65 derived from it, has cylinder-selective throttle control, but in contrast to this, it has a VANOS , which is subjected to 80 bar oil pressure from a chain-driven high-pressure pump, and an air mass meter per cylinder bank.

The vehicle characteristics can be adjusted electronically. The shock absorbers can be adjusted in three stages (comfort, normal, sport), the switching speed of the automated seven-speed transmission (SMG) and the full engine power can be activated, which is reduced to 294 kW (400 hp) after the engine is started. The stability control ( DSC ) can be switched off and set to a mode called "MDM", which allows the vehicle to break away up to a certain drift angle, but prevents the dangerous crossing of the limit range.

The M6 Coupé has a carbon roof that is sealed with clear lacquer . The lightweight roof shifts the center of gravity of the car downwards, which means less rolling movement in curves. CFRP is also used for the bumper beams.

Like its predecessor, the Coupé has a lightweight roof made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . According to BMW, both variants of the M6 should consume up to 30 percent less fuel than the previous versions.

The maximum speed of this generation of the M6 is electronically limited to 250 km / h as standard and is increased to 305 km / h in conjunction with the optional M-Drivers Package .

The M6 has the S63 V8 twin turbo gasoline engine with a seven-speed M double clutch transmission and some technologies that are also used in the BMW M5  (F10).

In January 2013, the M6 Gran Coupe was first presented at the Detroit Motor Show. The sedan has the same technology as the coupé and convertible. The Gran Coupé also has a carbon roof.

In March 2018, the end of the 6 series was announced and then replaced by the new 8 series.
