The BMW N63 is a V8 petrol engine from BMW .

Conception

Compared to its predecessor, the N63 engine was supposed to consume less fuel and develop more power. In addition, the displacement was reduced to 4.4 liters and it was equipped with bi-turbocharging and direct injection ; the first N63 engine introduced in 2008 has an output of 300 kW. The engine is based on the " closed deck design ", it has an aluminum block and aluminum cylinder heads. Two overhead camshafts, which are driven by a timing chain, are installed in each cylinder bank - both are at an angle of 90 ° to each other. The timing is variable through VANOS . The exhaust gas turbocharger and catalytic converter were placed between the cylinder banks, the air inlet is on the outside of the cylinder banks. The crankshaft is made of forged steel and has a drive wheel for the oil pump. It runs in crankshaft bearings with a diameter of 65 mm. Ancillary units such as the water pump, alternator and power steering pump are driven by a belt.

S63 variants

The letter S in the BMW engine designations from the corporate division means "Motorsport GmbH". The following number is based on the basic family.

S63 in X5 / X6 M (E70 / 71)

Use of an M-TwinPower turbocharger. The associated mechanical and thermal loads require a different alloy for the cylinder head and a revised cooling system. The camshafts were also changed and the valve lift increased.

S63TU in the F10 / 12/13

The boost pressure (from 1.2 to 1.5 bar) and the compression (again to 10: 1) have been increased, the pistons and crankshaft have been changed. New version VANOS .

S63 of the M6 GT3 (P63)

Oil supply based on dry sump and charge air cooling. Cosworth engine control with software from BMW Motorsport.

S63T4 of the M5 F90

Compared to the S63 in the X5-F15 or X6-F16 (see table Technical data), different chargers and a modified intercooling system were used.

P63 / 1 (previously for M8 GTE)

In the P63 / 1, the cylinder head and raw cast parts from the series engine S63T4 are used. The flat crankshaft, which u. a. ensures a more regular firing order. The geometry of the combustion chamber, including the inlet and outlet channels, the intake and exhaust system and the turbocharger were also modified. The changes were made primarily with regard to the continuous load of 24 hours at full throttle, which is common in long-distance motorsport. Of around 2300 individual parts, 181 come from series engines from BMW M GmbH, 704 were specially developed for the P63 / 1 or adopted from other BMW Motorsport engines. The motor achieves an efficiency of well over 40 percent.
