Successor:

The BMW B58 is a straight-six engine - gasoline engine of the automobile manufacturer BMW . Together with the B38 ( three-cylinder in-line engine ), B48 ( four-cylinder in-line engine ) and the three diesel engines B37 ( three-cylinder ), B47 ( four-cylinder ) and B57 ( six-cylinder ), the B58 is one of the latest modular engines from BMW. It was published in 2015.

The so-called lead plant for these engines is the BMW plant in Munich .

construction

Like its direct predecessor N55 (and in contrast to the N54 ), the BMW B58 in-line six-cylinder engine has only one turbocharger ; this is (as with the N55) in twin scroll design . The volume of 500 cm³ of the individual cylinder resulted from thermodynamic considerations.

In contrast to the N55, the charge air is indirectly cooled with water for better response. The indirect charge air cooling also contributes to improved efficiency. The B58 is also equipped with direct injection , fully variable valve lift control VALVETRONIC of the latest generation and variable camshaft control VANOS . The injection pressure is 200 bar.

Due to the in- line six-cylinder design traditionally used at BMW , there are no free mass moments and forces of the first, second or third order. As a result, unlike the B47 , B48 and B38 , no balancer shaft is required. Because of the increased torque, the crankshaft is forged.

The crankcase (engine block), cylinder head and oil pan are made of aluminum. The engine block is cast in closed-deck construction, with arc wire-sprayed steel cylinder liners (LDS) directly on the aluminum. This has the advantage of more direct heat transfer, simple manufacture and high resistance to wear and tear as well as to fuels containing sulfur, such as those found in America. For the same reason, piezo injectors are not used, but the more robust coil injectors.

The B58 engine again has a mechanically driven water pump instead of the electrically driven water pump in the cooling circuit that was common in previous years: the pump is part of the heat management component that can regulate the water flow in a targeted manner. There is also an electric water pump, which is mainly intended to protect the bearings of the turbocharger from overheating, as can happen when the car is parked hot.

In the meantime, there is an optional M-Performance Sound + Power exhaust system with flap exhaust for almost all models in which the engine has been installed, which increases the torque in automatic transmission vehicles from 450 Nm to 500 Nm, in manual transmissions to 480 for durability reasons Nm.

Changes October 2018

In October 2018, BMW presented some improvements: The engine has become six kilograms (two for the engine block, two for the cylinder head and another two thanks to a one-piece chain drive), the injection pressure has been increased to 350 bar with new injection nozzles, and the noise is reduced by a new position of the counterweights of the crankshaft decreased. Findings from the multi-body simulation were incorporated , and the crankshaft, which was still forged, became two kilograms lighter.

Thanks to the one-piece chain drive, there is no need for a support wheel, which, together with the improved slide rail design, results in 30 percent less friction in the chain drive.

The less powerful version, the "medium power level", has a new cylinder head with an integrated manifold, which has advantages in terms of heat management and, among other things, allows heat to be distributed more efficiently at important points. The exhaust gas turbocharger of the medium output level has also been adapted to the new position of the manifold. In general, the cylinder head and crankcase now have their own cooling circuit ("split cooling approach"). This allows the cylinder wall temperature to remain high, which has advantages in terms of combustion and fewer soot particles in the event of a sudden load change.
