The N40 is an inline four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine from the automobile manufacturer BMW with 16 valves. It replaced the BMW M43 . The BMW N40 was specially developed for sales markets with special displacement taxation and in parallel with the N42 . So is z. B. the cylinder crankcase and piston of these engines are identical, since the cylinder bore is the same with 84 mm. The different cubic capacities are generated by a different hub. In contrast to the N42 , the N40 does not have the Valvetronic system.

When the N42 was modified into the N46 , the N40 was also further developed into the N45 .
