The BMW S38 is a DOHC - series - six-cylinder - petrol engine in four-valve technology with manifold injection engine manufacturer BMW or the associated BMW M GmbH , which was presented 1988th The two overhead camshafts are driven by a duplex chain . The mixture is supplied separately for each cylinder via its own intake manifold and a throttle valve per cylinder ( individual throttle system ). It was used in the M5 E34 . The engine has its origins in the BMW M30 , with which it no longer has much in common, and is the successor and close relative of the BMW M88, which is also based on the M30 and was first installed in the BMW M1 .

The specialty of the S38 compared to other BMW six-cylinder engines lies in addition to the four-valve technology in the single throttle valve system, which was then only used in racing , which in conjunction with the electronic engine control ensures better cylinder filling and better response. An electrically adjustable flap in the air collector, which has the same effects as a variable intake manifold length, resulted in better power delivery in the lower speed range.

Both engines were designed from the outset so that they met all of the statutory emission standards that existed around the world at the time. Different catalytic converters were used, which were made of metal or ceramic depending on the engine version. Only in a few countries (for example South Africa) in which unleaded petrol was not fully established when it was launched on the market was this technology not used.

The engine, just like the vehicle that goes with it, was developed and built by BMW M GmbH .

This engine was only offered with a manual gearbox, initially with a 5-speed gearbox and from May 1994 with a 6-speed gearbox from the manufacturer Getrag.

variants

In the BMW E28  M5 for the US market a version of the M88 / 3 engine was installed, which was equipped with a catalyst and at constant 3453 cm 3 engine capacity 191 kW makes; this M88 / 3 engine is already designated as S38B35 and was built from 1984 to 1989.

The S38 is a further development of the BMW M88 engine derived from the M30 . Both the M88 and the first version of the S38 (S38B36) have a displacement of (rounded) 3.5 liters. An increase to 3.8 liters (S38B38) was achieved through a larger bore and a new forged crankshaft , which increased the stroke from 86 to 90 mm. In addition, the inlet valves have been enlarged and the air filter housing has been optimized for flow. Another innovation in the S38B38 is the distributorless ignition, which has six individual ignition coils. The S38B38 engine weighs 236.8 kg.
