The BMW M43 is a four-cylinder - petrol engine of the car manufacturer BMW and successor of the BMW M40 . The crankcase (engine block) was taken over unchanged. Compared to the predecessor engine, the toothed belt drive on the M43 has been replaced by a maintenance-free timing chain, friction in the valve train has been reduced by means of roller cam followers, the failure-prone ignition distributor has been replaced by an ignition system with static high-voltage distribution, the crankshaft has been lightened and compression slightly increased. The auxiliary unit drive, the crankcase ventilation, the thermostat housing and the intake system have also been revised. The latter was now more aerodynamically designed and designed as a differentiated intake system (DISA).

The BMW M43 was used in the BMW E36 316i and 318i from 1994 .

In addition, there were two petrol and natural gas variants which had a “g” instead of an “i” in the model name. The bivalent petrol-natural gas drive was offered in the E36 series as a 316g compact (two-seater) and in the E34 series as a 518g touring . Due to its torque curve, the M43 is particularly suitable for bivalent drives.

For the market launch of the E46 , the M43 was technically revised and used from then on as the M43TÜ until it was replaced in 2001 by its two successors, the N40 and N42 .
