The BMW N20 is a gasoline engine from the car manufacturer BMW with four cylinders in line and turbocharging . The new generation of engines was presented in January 2011. The first car with this engine is the X1 xDrive28i . There it replaced the six-cylinder N52 and has since been used successively in other series.

technology

General

The N20 engine was developed as a component of the EfficientDynamics concept, which is intended to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions while improving driving performance. The design is based on the six-cylinder N55 , which has advanced into performance ranges that were previously reserved for engines with eight cylinders. The N20 has two fewer cylinders than the N52 and N53 , which it is intended to complement or replace. As a result, it has lower friction losses, is lighter and therefore consumes less fuel.

In the X1 xDrive28i , the N20 achieves a weight advantage of 15 kg compared to the N52 (curb weight with automatic transmission according to EU: N20 1670 kg, N52 1685 kg) and an average fuel consumption of 1.5 l in the EU test cycle (7.9 l to 9, 4 l).

engine

The engine block and cylinder head are made of aluminum . The engine has two overhead camshafts and the camshaft adjustment double VANOS . The lift of the inlet valves can also be adjusted using the Valvetronic system, which uses a new servomotor with a built-in sensor to achieve higher actuating speeds. The throttle valve is thereby superfluous, whereby the throttle losses are reduced and the response behavior is improved. The mixture is prepared by the gasoline direct injection known as High Precision Injection (HPI) . Via solenoid valve injectors arranged centrally between the valves, the fuel is transported in a jet to the spark plug with a maximum injection pressure of 200 bar, which enables more precise metering of the fuel. The cooling effect of the directly injected gasoline enables higher compression to be achieved.

Charging

The turbocharger has two separate inlet spirals ( Twin-Scroll , called TwinPower at BMW). The cylinders are combined in groups with a favorable ignition interval (240 ° for three-cylinder groups, 360 ° for two-cylinder groups). Therefore, at the end of the fourth stroke, when the inlet and outlet valves are open, there is a low pressure in the exhaust line, as a result of which the combustion chamber can be flushed with air. This increases the mass flow and the compressor works further away from the surge limit with better efficiency and higher speed. In addition, the residual gas content in the combustion chamber decreases, which reduces the tendency to knock. Twin scrollers are normally combined with camshaft actuators and direct injection in gasoline engines in order to be able to use the flushing effect without unburned fuel getting into the exhaust.

Periphery

Measures from the EfficientDynamics package also help to save fuel , including brake energy recovery , electric power steering and an automatic start-stop system . What is new is the need-based regulation of the oil pump and an electrically driven coolant pump that can be controlled independently of the engine speed as required.
