The S55 is an in- line six-cylinder engine with twin-turbo charging from the automobile manufacturer BMW , which is based on the BMW N55 . The biturbo was introduced in the new M3 (F80) and M4 (F82) in mid-2014 . With the end of the last BMW M3 generation, the chapter on high-performance naturally aspirated engines at BMW was closed. This predecessor M3 had a 309 kW (420 hp) high-revving V8 engine with a displacement of four liters ( BMW S65 ).

The new six-cylinder is superior to it in terms of torque and in non-full load situations in terms of consumption; a maximum of 5% in the life of an M3 takes place in the full load range. Two to three liters less gasoline should be used in normal road traffic. The graphic in the web link also shows a comparison of some sizes.

The S55 has the same dimensions of bore and stroke as well as an aluminum crankcase as the N55; however, the latter is designed in a closed-deck design in order to achieve greater rigidity and to be able to work with higher combustion pressures; unlike its basic model, it has a water intercooler in addition to the two turbochargers , which is attached to the top of the engine.

In addition to the aluminum crankcase, the following three features also help to save weight: Instead of inserts, the cylinder liners are arc-sprayed ; the cylinder head is also made of aluminum; Magnesium is used for the oil pan . The crankshaft is made of steel, forged and hardened. The final speed is 7600 min −1 .

The two overhead camshafts are controlled by VANOS , which now enables faster adjustments, the valves by Valvetronic III. As with the N55, the exhaust valves are sodium-filled.

The most powerful version with 368 kW (500 PS) in the BMW M4 GTS (2015) uses water injection .

Since 2016 the BMW F80 and BMW F82 have been available with the additional Competition Package , which increases the output of the S55 to 331 kW (450 PS).

The BMW M2 "Competition" Coupé, available since September 2018, is also equipped with the S55 engine. Here it has an output of 302 kW (405 hp) and delivers a maximum torque of 550 Nm (406 lbf ft). BMW also uses the S55 in order to be able to comply with stricter emission limits with the M2.
