BMW F82, F83

The fourth generation BMW M3 was available in three body styles. Before series production, a near-series concept vehicle based on the E92 was presented as the "M3 Concept" at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show . The Coupé (E92) (official exhibition premiere: IAA 2007) first appeared in autumn 2007 , while in spring 2008 the convertible (E93) (official exhibition premiere: Geneva Motor Show 2008) and the sedan (E90) (official exhibition premiere: Tokyo Motor Show 2007) followed. In September 2008, the M3 sedan was awarded the same time as the more civil E90 a facelift . Coupé and convertible of the M3 were modified in spring 2010.

design

Some optical details of the predecessor, such as the elevation on the bonnet (“power dome”), the wider wheel arches, the four-pipe exhaust system and the air outlets (“gills”) on the fenders, have been adopted. The exterior mirrors are similar to those of the M3 from the E36 series. As a special feature, the front of the M3 sedan corresponds to the M3 coupé or convertible, while the regular 3-series sedan offers a front view that differs significantly from the coupé / convertible with differently shaped headlights.

technology

BMW tried to optimize the weight during development. For this purpose, the standard roof of the coupé was developed from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (so-called "carbon fiber"), the bumper supports made from endless glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic (so-called organic sheet made of PA6 / glass) and an aluminum hood was installed. The 202-kilogram four-liter eight-cylinder with all ancillary units, for example, is at least 15 kilograms lighter than the six-cylinder from its predecessor. The curb weight is 1655 kg ( Coupé ) and thus almost 100 kg more than that of the predecessor. All three variants only use the BMW S65 engine with a high-revving V8.

From May 2008 there was the BMW M3 with the dual clutch transmission developed by GETRAG (marketing name: "M-DKG"). This has seven gears, can be operated using paddle shifters on the steering wheel and offers an automatic mode as well as " Launch Control ". There are also a total of 11 driving programs that can be set at the push of a button. In the "D mode" called automatic mode, there are five, in the "S mode" called manual mode, even six drive programs are available. In fine gradations, it goes from comfortable settings to tough racing characteristics. In the lowest level, the car drives, if necessary, in second gear, which z. B. is advantageous on slippery winter roads. At the other end of the scale, the gears are turned out to the maximum to enable the fastest possible acceleration. The driver can save his personal favorite setting and then call it up again at any time by pressing the "M Drive" button on the steering wheel.

There are also three different damper characteristics that can be selected at the push of a button. The standard electronic rear axle locking differential locks variably from zero to 100 percent; the electronic stability program can be switched off completely if desired.

The M3 has a lap time of 8.05 minutes on the Nürburgring - Nordschleife and thus undercuts its predecessor by 17 seconds, whose time was measured at 8.22 minutes.

The top speed is limited to 250 km / h. But the so-called “M Driver's Package” at a price of 2450 euros included, in addition to electronic activation at 280 km / h, a voucher for a BMW driver training course.

Comparable vehicles from German manufacturers are the Audi RS4 and RS5 , the Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG and the C63 AMG .

engine

The engine of the M3 has a displacement of 3999 cc with eight cylinders in a V shape. In terms of design, it largely corresponds to the 5-liter V10 of the M5 (E60) (cylinder angle 90 ° and the essential basic dimensions) and replaces the S54 in-line six-cylinder engine of the predecessor. In contrast to the V10, however, the new engine works with a low-pressure double VANOS . The engine develops 309 kW (420 hp) at 8300 min −1 and a torque of 400 Nm at 3900 min −1 . The machine rotates at 8400 min -1 in the onset speed limiter, making it the highest rotating series engine, the BMW has ever built. The engine does not achieve the high specific torque of the S54 engine from the E46 because the V8 is designed as a short-stroke engine in order to reduce the excessive piston speeds of the S54 at maximum engine speed .

The advanced energy management in the vicinity of the engine should also have a direct effect on the efficiency of the drive. The generation of electricity for the on-board network is concentrated only on the overrun and braking phases. The drive of the generator is therefore decoupled in the pulling phase, which in extreme cases facilitates the work of the motor to achieve higher speeds.

Reviews

Auto Bild magazine carried out an endurance test over 100,000 kilometers with an M3 Coupé, and "the M3 proved to be a reliable piece of sports equipment" .

“The few storage options in the interior, the wobbly cup holders and the, admittedly construction-related, narrow access to the rear seats were criticized. In addition, there was a rattling in the drive train and the transmission, which was difficult to shift when it was cold, almost gritty. The latter is hardly of any consequence in Germany; around 75 percent of all M3 buyers now choose the dual clutch transmission for 3800 euros, which was not yet available with our order. Shortly before the end of the endurance test, the M3 had to go to the workshop for the second and last time after the iPhone problem. A colleague had discovered cracks in the ventilation holes on the front brake discs; after consultation with the workshop, we decided to swap. A leak in the exhaust manifold suspected by the same colleague could not be detected. At the end of the endurance test, the clutch felt as if it would have to be replaced soon, but after twelve months and 101,435 kilometers we said goodbye to an endurance tester that was very expensive in terms of fuel and maintenance, but otherwise flawless. M3 GTS / M3 CRT

M3 GTS at the Autosport International Show 2011.

In November 2009, M GmbH presented the BMW M3 GTS, the direct successor to the M3 CSL (E46). The model was limited to 150 units and offered at a price of € 136,850. The lightweight M3 weighs only 1530 kilograms (according to DIN, corresponds to 1605 kg according to EU standards) - which corresponds to a weight saving of 50 kilograms compared to the series M3. The engine's displacement was increased to 4.4 liters through a larger piston stroke, and the output rose to 331 kW.

Instead of the rear seats, the GTS has a screwed roll bar behind the B-pillar , which can be expanded into a full-fledged roll cage . The body offers mounting points for the installation of racing four- or six-point seat belts from Schroth . In addition, there is also a mounting option for a fire extinguisher behind the front seats.

The BMW M3 GTS was individually built in the BMW Motorsport Manufactory according to customer orders and initially approved for road traffic in Germany. The first models were delivered from May 2010.

As a sedan counterpart to the M3 GTS, BMW presented the M3 CRT in 2011, 67 of which were sold from 2012. The abbreviation CRT stands for Carbon Racing Technology and indicates the weight loss of approx. 70 kg compared to a similarly equipped production M3 sedan. The sedan is powered by the engine of the BMW M3 GTS, but in comparison to this, the CRT does not have a roll cage or 4-point belts. Particularly noticeable on the M3 CRT are the silver-matt paintwork, red accents on the body and in the interior, as well as a titanium exhaust system.
