BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (internal series designation F45 ) is a compact van and the first model with front-wheel drive from the German car manufacturer BMW .

Model history

In 1987, Eberhard von Kuenheim , then BMW CEO, declared in the BMW factory newspaper that BMW would not expand the model range downwards and that there would be no BMW 214. In fact, in March 2015, BMW introduced the 214d with a three-cylinder diesel engine as an entry-level model.

The 2 Series Active Tourer was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014, has been manufactured at the BMW plant in Leipzig since July 2014 and has been sold since September 2014. Initially, there were two gasoline engines and a diesel engine: a newly developed three-cylinder engine in the 218i with 100 kW (136 hp), the 225i with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 170 kW (231 hp) and the diesel engine variant 218d with 110 kW (150 hp) ).

Further model variants were brought onto the market in November 2014. These include the 220i with 141 kW (192 PS), an xDrive version of the 225i, a 216d with 85 kW (116 PS) and a 220d with 140 kW (190 PS), which can also be ordered with xDrive on request.

In June 2015, BMW also launched a seven-seater 2-series Gran Tourer , which, on the same front-wheel drive platform shared by the Tourer with the Mini, offers a little more space at the rear with a larger wheelbase and length so that a third row of seats is also possible.

After the first study of the Active Tourer in 2012 was a hybrid, the plug-in hybrid version 225xe with all-wheel drive, which has been available since August 2016 , was presented at the IAA 2015 in Frankfurt .

A facelift for the 2 Series Active Tourer was presented in January 2018 and was formally shown for the first time at the Brussels Motorshow 2018.

At the end of 2019, so-called Erlkönige from the successor to the Active Tourer for 2021 were spotted.

safety

The vehicle received five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test in 2014 and four stars in the C-NCAP crash test in 2015.

landing gear

At the front, the vehicle has a newly developed single-joint strut axle. Light components, high component rigidity and coordinated axle and elastokinematics result in agile steering behavior, high accuracy and a steering feel that is largely free of drive influences. Swivel bearings made of aluminum, the use of high-strength steels for axle carriers and wishbones as well as a hollow anti- roll bar with discontinuous wall thickness reduce unsprung masses. The front and rear dampers are decoupled from the body by three-way support bearings.

The Active Tourer has electromechanical power steering. The steering gear forms a component with the servo unit, the steering power assistance acts directly and with low friction on the pinion (single pinion). Hardware and software have been matched to the front-wheel drive. A "Servotronic" is available on request, which regulates the steering assistance depending on the speed. Variable sports steering is also available, which adapts the gear ratio in the steering gear to the angle of the steering wheel so that parking and turning maneuvers are associated with fewer steering movements. The 214d already has internally ventilated disc brakes at the front .

The rear wheels are guided by a newly developed multi-link axle that is connected to the body via the axle carrier. High-strength steels, particularly stiff links and a hollow anti-roll bar are used. Disc brakes are also installed at the rear.

Hybrid

BMW 225 Hybrid on test drive in July 2015

The BMW 225xe iPerformance is a compact van with a plug-in hybrid drive . It has a combined drive consisting of an internal combustion engine on the front axle and an electric motor on the rear axle, and can therefore drive all four wheels. The 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine (as an adapted B38) has an output of 100 kW (136 hp) and drives the front wheels via a conventional 6-speed automatic transmission; the electric motor has an output of 65 kW (88 PS; the value is the maximum power that can be used for approx. 12 seconds) and drives the rear wheels via a detachable 1-speed gearbox. Both drives complement each other almost imperceptibly, the maximum system output is 165 kW (224 PS) and 385 Nm "system torque" (which cannot be directly compared with the conventional torque specifications). Depending on the drive mode selected and the battery's state of charge, the electric motor can drive the vehicle alone or support the internal combustion engine when it is operated. During coasting and braking, it converts part of the kinetic energy into electrical energy (= recuperation ), which is fed back into the high-voltage battery and stored.

The lithium-ion battery with an initial gross capacity of 7.7 kWh (available net capacity 5.7–6.1 kWh) is located next to the 36-liter petrol tank under the rear seat bench and the load compartment floor; the trunk of the 225xe is therefore reduced to 400 liters. The vehicle achieved a maximum range of 41 km (according to NEDC) and a maximum electric speed of 125 km / h in purely electric mode. The combined consumption of fuel was 2.0–2.1 l / 100 km (according to NEDC, whereby the consumption of electricity is not mentioned in this information) or 2.3–2.5 l / 100 km (according to WLTP) . The maximum range is thus a little over 500 km. The battery can be fully charged in 3–4 hours at standard Schuko sockets, at wall boxes or charging stations using the charger supplied . "DC fast charging" is not possible.

As a result of the conversion of the standard consumption measurement cycle to the WLTP cycle, the 225xe in Germany initially no longer met the funding requirement for the federal government's environmental bonus to support new electric vehicles on September 1, 2018. From production July 1, 2019, the 225xe, like other BMW plug-in models, received the high-voltage cells of the newer generation, which have a higher energy density with the same dimensions and a gross capacity increased to 9.7 kWh (available net Capacity 8.8 kWh when new). The specified electric range was increased to 50–53 km (according to WLTP) or 55–57 km (according to NEDC) eligible for funding. The total consumption of this version is given as fuel 1.9–2.1 l / 100 km and electrical power 13.5–14.2 kWh / 100 km (according to NEDC), and increases in practice due to factors such as personal driving style, Route characteristics, outside temperature, heating, air conditioning, pre-heating and selected equipment.

Facelift

Active Tourer from 2018

For the facelift, which was presented in January 2018 and put into production from March 2018, the six-speed automatic transmission (except for the standard integrated 225xe), as well as the eight-speed automatic transmission only in the 220i, can no longer be ordered; they are replaced by a seven-speed dual clutch transmission (7DCT300 from Getrag). The eight-speed automatic transmission (from Aisin) is still offered for the high-torque models 218d, 220d and 225i.

The technical revision (TÜ1) is incorporated into the engines, which results in better pollutant values and small changes to the nominal power and fuel consumption values.

The models with a diesel engine (B37 in 216d; B47 in 218d, 220d) are used to reduce the NO x emissions with the combination of SCR and NO x equipped storage catalytic converter, so that at least the emission standard meet Euro-6d temp. Two turbochargers are used in the four-cylinder diesel engines (B47).

The revised four-cylinder gasoline engines (B48 in the 220i, 225i) will meet the Euro 6c emissions class from March 2018, and will be equipped with a gasoline particulate filter from July 2018, like the three-cylinder gasoline engines (B38 in the 216i, 218i) from March 2018 thus also the emission class Euro 6d-temp.

The four-cylinder engines have a duplex exhaust pipe system . In addition, lights and bumpers were changed.

Technical specifications

The body reached c W values from 0.26 to 0.29.

At an additional cost, the rear bench can be moved 13 cm and the backrest can be adjusted in three stages.

Note: The information on fuel consumption over 100 km and the resulting value for CO 2 emissions do not take into account the different determination methods, i.e. H. whether the information was determined according to the NEDC, WLTP, or NEDC (converted) method. Also note the lack of power consumption when specifying the plug-in hybrid model.
