The BMW X4 (internal designation: F26 ) is a crossover SUV, BMW itself calls this type of vehicle SAC (Sports Activity Coupe). The concept model of the mid-range vehicle , which was already very similar to the later production model, premiered in April 2013 at the Shanghai Motor Show , the production model at NYIAS 2014. It was built at the BMW plant in Spartanburg and, since 2016, in the Brazilian BMW plant in Araquari.
The BMW X4 extends the X series and, together with its bigger brother, the BMW X6 , is the manufacturer's second SUV coupé.
At the start of the market, BMW announced that the F26 will have a shortened life cycle, as the BMW F25 , on which the F26 is based, had already been revised when it was launched. In February 2018, BMW finally presented the successor model G02 .
body
The BMW F26 shares the platform with the BMW F25, but the design of the coupé SUV is only slightly based on the X3. The front is similar to this, but the front headlights and the kidneys are different, the much larger air inlets ensure that the entire front unit looks wider and sportier. Visually, the X4 is distinguished from the X3 by the two-part beads and the L-shaped LED reversing lights. Compared to the X3, the X4 looks sportier and more dynamic, one reason is probably that the body was lowered by 36 millimeters and lengthened by 14 millimeters.
Interior and equipment
Much of the interior was based on the X3, but the driver's seat was lowered by two centimeters compared to this, and the three-part rear bench by three centimeters. The crossover SUV had the Professional radio with iDrive controller and a central display, sports steering, LED fog lights, xenon headlights and a parking warning system as standard . The basic equipment could be supplemented by the special equipment xLine, which was supposed to emphasize the off-road character of the crossover SUV with optical style elements such as the underrun protection and the side skirts, as well as by the M package, which put the sportiness of the X4 in the foreground.
Engines
When the BMW X4 was launched, six and later seven different engine variants were available, three diesel engines and four petrol engines. The base of the X4 was equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine that developed 135 kW (184 hp) and developed a torque of 270 Newton meters between 1250 rpm and 4500 rpm. The most powerful engine in the X4, the X4 M40i, was a supercharged straight-six with a displacement of 3.0 liters and 265 kW (360 hp). Like the initial top model xDrive35i, it was based on the N55B30 engine. The diesel engine was based on a four-cylinder turbo engine with an output of 140 kW (190 hp). The top model xDrive 35d was equipped with an in-line six-cylinder biturbo that developed 230 kW (313 hp). The maximum torque of 630 Newton meters was already between 1500 / min and 2500 / min. All BMW X4s were equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive as standard, which flexibly distributes the drive power to the individual wheels. The X4 also had a switch, known by BMW as the Driving Experience Switch, which the driver could use to choose between the standard settings for the engine and transmission, as well as the ECO PRO and Sport settings, depending on requirements.
Launch and prices
The base model with a gasoline engine, the 20i, cost 46,300 euros, the top model, the X4 M40i, released in December 2015, cost 68,400 euros. The basic model of the X4 with diesel engines, the 20d, started at 46,000 euros, the most expensive diesel, the 35d, at 60,500 euros. (all prices valid for Germany)
Technical specifications
When the X4 was launched, there were three petrol and three diesel engines, the top model X4 M40i appeared in December 2015 and, like the xDrive35i, was based on the N55B30 engine. All models had xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic as standard, with the exception of the four-cylinder diesel 20d, which was also available with a 6-speed manual transmission.
