The E36 Compact was launched in March 1994. At first it was only available as a 316i with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 75 kW (102 hp).

In 1995 further engine variants followed, such as the 16-valve 318ti with 103 kW (140 PS), the turbodiesel 318tds with 66 kW (90 PS) and the natural gas- powered 316g with 60 kW (82 PS). The 6-cylinder 323ti with 125 kW (170 PS) followed in 1997.

After the normal E36 was replaced by the E46 in spring 1998, the Compact continued to be built. From spring 1999 until the model was phased out in September 2000, the 316i was delivered with a 1.9-liter engine with 77 kW (105 PS) from the E46, the 318ti was no longer available.

After a break of almost a year, the second generation of the Compact, based on the E46, was launched on the market in June 2001; It was shown in public for the first time at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show . The three-door model differs from the E46 Coupé with its individual headlights. At the rear the overhang was shortened and a tailgate was used. The rear lights can only be found on the fender corners; They initially consisted of individual lights in a silver housing with a clear glass cover, unlike the brand and like the Lexus IS at the time . With the facelift, the rear became more conventional, red rear light units were installed and a wider trunk handle was added.

As motors, the four-cylinder gasoline engines were 316Ti (1.8 liter, 85 kW / 115 hp) and 318ti (2.0 liters, 105 kW / 143 PS), the six-cylinder 325ti (2.5 liters, 141 kW / 192 hp) as well as the four-cylinder turbodiesel engine 320td (2.0 liters, 110 kW / 150 PS). The facelift followed in 2003 and a less powerful diesel engine, the 318td, with a maximum output of 85 kW (115 hp). In the 316ti engine, BMW used the Valvetronic variable valve control system for the first time .

The Compact series was discontinued in December 2004 in favor of the 1 Series BMW E87 . Its coupé (E82) was shaped similarly.
