The seventh generation (internal designation: G20 - Sedan , G21 - combination ) of the 3-series from BMW covers the mid-range segment from the car manufacturer and has been available since of 2019.
The G22 Coupé will again be marketed as the BMW 4 Series in order to represent a higher positioning in comparison to the Sedan and Touring.
Model history
On October 2, 2018, BMW officially presented the G20 at the Paris Motor Show , and sales started on March 9, 2019. The production locations are the main plant in Munich , for the version with an extended wheelbase, which was formally shown publicly for the first time at Auto Shanghai 2019, the Tiexi plant in Shenyang, China, and the new San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico. The Touring version was introduced on June 12, 2019 and was launched in late September 2019.
technology
As for the 7 Series ( BMW G11 ) and the latest Z4 uses BMW for the G20, the current BMW CLAR- platform ( Cl beauty Ar chitecture). The body is slightly larger and has a lower drag coefficient (c w ) from 0.26 to 0.23 on the 320d. An active air flap control is used for this purpose. The center of gravity has been lowered by 10 mm. The torsional rigidity has been increased by 20 percent compared to the previous model. The bonnet, tailgate and fenders are made of aluminum, which results in 55 kg less weight despite the larger dimensions; In the four-cylinder versions it is distributed exactly evenly between the front and rear axles. For better noise dampening, a front pane with noise-absorbing film ("acoustic glass") is used in all variants. The M-Sport version has its own front apron. All versions have LED headlights , and laser light is also available as an option.
The vehicle has a MacPherson strut front axle with separately articulated wishbones and tension struts and a five- link rear axle . New types of dampers with stroke-dependent friction and an additional piston are used for greater energy dissipation. The “M sports suspension” has an electronically controlled sports differential with a variable locking effect in the rear axle drive and an “M sports brake system”.
A lane departure assistant as well as the collision and pedestrian warning with city braking function are part of the basic equipment. Further assistants , including rear collision and cross traffic warning, are available on request; There is also a parking assistant that takes over the steering, acceleration and braking, including gear selection of the automatic transmission, when parking and exiting a parking space, and can keep the car exactly on the previous forward course when reversing for a distance of up to 50 meters.
In addition to gesture control, voice control is also available for infotainment , but it can also be operated via iDrive or touchscreen. The voice control has adaptive software so that it adapts to the driver over a longer period of time. Wireless software updates are possible in conjunction with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional .
drive
Four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as well as an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine were available at the start of sales . Their maximum torque is between 300 and 580 Nm. The four-cylinder diesel models have a six-speed manual transmission, all other variants have an eight-speed automatic transmission . The diesel engine variant 320d is also available with the variable all-wheel drive xDrive . According to the preliminary information, CO 2 emissions are between 108 g / km and 139 g / km, depending on the engine.
A new top model followed in the summer of 2019 with the M340i , with the 330e a version with a plug-in hybrid drive with a purely electric range of 60 km and versions of the sedan with all-wheel drive for the 320i, 330i and 330d engine levels. The M340i has the latest generation of the BMW B58 engine with reduced friction, lighter weight and the latest thermal management. The latter has two separate cooling circuits for the cylinder head and crankcase (“split cooling approach”), which enables better combustion when the engine is not fully used. The hybrid model has a system output of 185 kW which is increased to 215 kW in the "XTraBoost" mode; the combined standard fuel consumption is 1.6–1.9 l / 100 km and the combined standard electricity consumption 14.8–15.4 kWh / 100 km. Since summer 2020, the 330e has also been available as a touring and with all-wheel drive.
