The BMW E53 is an all-wheel-drive car with a horizontally and centrally split tailgate from BMW . The E53 is the first generation of the BMW X5 .

The vehicle, which was presented at the NAIAS 1999, was presented in the USA in autumn 1999 and was the first (restricted) off-road vehicle offered by BMW. It was produced in Greer (South Carolina) in the USA . After the vehicle was available from dealers in the USA at the end of 1999, it also came to Germany in May 2000. This first X5 series was produced until the end of 2006 and is therefore the predecessor of the BMW E70 , which was available in Europe from March 2007.

Vehicle characteristics

The X5 is considered an "SUV" ( Sports Utility Vehicle ); the manufacturer himself describes the car neither as an “SUV” nor as an “ off-road vehicle ”, but markets the X5 as an “SAV” (Sports Activity Vehicle) - a category created by BMW especially for the X5. A smaller variant of an SAV presented in autumn 2003 is the BMW X3 and, since autumn 2009, the BMW X1 .

The X5 has a self-supporting body and individually suspended wheels. The lack of gear reduction for the terrain and the engine and gearbox concept, which is more intended for the road, make the X5 (as well as the X3) unsuitable for heavy off-road use. But it is considered a more sporty vehicle among the various SUV models.

Facelift

In September 2003, almost simultaneously with the introduction of the X3 made in Austria, the X5 received a facelift. The main changes were the headlights, the fog lights, the radiator grille, as well as the bonnet and taillights.

Engine variants

When the BMW X5 was launched, it was only offered with two engine variants:

By the beginning of 2002, the engine range was expanded to include two further variants:

In October 2003, as part of a facelift, the new 4.4-l V8 N62 engine with Valvetronic was introduced; it replaced the old M62 engine of the 4.4i with 210 kW (286 hp). The output of the BMW X5 4.4i increased to 235 kW (320 hp). Furthermore, it was the M57 diesel engine of the BMW X5 3.0d technically revised, now received the common rail - direct injection of the second generation. This increased the output of the BMW X5 3.0d to 160 kW (218 hp). The improved xDrive all-wheel drive system was also introduced.

In April 2004, the new top variant followed with the X5 4.8is , which replaced the 4.6is . It was also based on the new V8-N62 engine and had a larger displacement (4799 instead of 4398 cm³), which BMW introduced in 2005 for the 5 and 7 Series.

particularities

  • At the Geneva Motor Show 2000, BMW showed a ready -to-drive single piece with the name X5 Le Mans and the BMW S70-V12 engine with 6.1 l displacement, which had already proven itself in the BMW V12 LMR and also in the McLaren F1 . With this engine, BMW won the overall classification of the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995 . Since no air flow limiter was necessary, it developed around 515 kW and delivered a torque of 720 Nm at 5000 rpm. This was enough for an acceleration of 4.7 seconds to 100 km / h and a top speed of over 300 km / h. Except for the interior, chassis and brakes, the vehicle was close to series production. The Nordschleife rounded Hans-Joachim Stuck with this vehicle in 7:49 minutes. In the mid-1990s, undercutting the 8-minute limit was only possible with a few street-legal sports cars.
  • In June 2008 the Munich Regional Court ruled that the Chinese off-road vehicle Shuanghuan SCEO from Red Star Auto Manufacturing Company was a copy of the first-generation BMW X5, prohibited the defendant importer from offering these vehicles for "business purposes in Germany" and ordered their destruction all "vehicles with a certain appearance" that were owned or owned by the defendant (Az .: 4HK O 16807/07).
