economy
The BMW US Manufacturing Company , the only North American BMW plant in the eastern part of the city ( Spartanburg County ) , is of particular economic importance for Greer . The BMW model Z4 was built there until the end of production in August 2008 , and its predecessor, the Z3 , until mid-2002 . The X3 , previously produced by Magna Steyr in Austria, has been built there since 2010 . The BMW X4 , X5 and the X6 off- road coupe are also built there.
The plant has the nickname “X-Werk” because of the models X3, X4, X5 and X6 produced there - matching the internal BMW name “Werk 10” ( X is the Roman symbol for “10” ). The so-called “BMW Center”, a BMW museum with an integrated lecture hall, is the visual flagship of the plant.
Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is in the immediate vicinity of the city .
