The Ruhr Institute was a science-oriented "think tank" based in Essen. Its main task was to advise on the content as well as the planning, organization and orientation of the events in the socio-political discussion groups of the Ruhr Institute. These discussion groups were established in many cities in the Ruhr area in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. They helped shape public opinion in the region through large lecture events with prominent scientists and politicians and through controversial panel discussions. In the socio-political discussion groups of the Ruhr Institute, executives from business, science, educational institutions, administration and the liberal professions met. In internal as well as in public events, the aim was to develop balanced socio-political standpoints and values on the major, publicly discussed questions. For the Ruhrinstitut, the foundation of this basic educational policy work was the values of the Basic Law (preamble, image of people, society and economy, catalog of basic rights) and Christian social teaching in both Catholic and Protestant forms.
