The Archive for Christian Democratic Politics (ACDP) in the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung , established in 1976 on the initiative of Heinrich Krone , Bruno Heck and Helmut Kohl in Sankt Augustin , is the central archive of Christian Democracy in Germany .

According to the ideas of the founders, by bringing together the sources on the history of the CDU and processing the collected material, science should be able to comprehensively research the effectiveness of Christian-democratic politics in German and European post-war history.

The ACDP is responsible for the archives of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), its leading representatives, committees and organizations. It also collects files and other testimonies from the Christian predecessor parties and those parties that have merged into the Union. The records of international, especially European, associations of Christian-democratic parties are also continuously archived. With the takeover of the archive and library of the East CDU , the ACDP has also gained importance for research into GDR history since 1990 .

The archive material currently comprises a total of more than 17,000 linear meters of files as well as extensive photo and poster collections and audio-visual materials. In addition to the historical archive, users have access to documentation that makes news and comments from the press and television as well as publications by government organizations, political parties, associations, churches and social institutions accessible. There is also a special academic library with currently around 164,000 titles on politics and contemporary history. The interlinking of the archive, documentation and library areas means that the ACDP is both a knowledge repository and a research facility. It unfolds its effectiveness

  • by making its holdings available for historical and political science research,
  • through our own exhibitions, conferences and series of events (e.g. since 2000 "The Kohl era in conversation"),
  • through editions and publications (especially in his series “Research and Sources on Contemporary History” and in his annual journal “Historisch-Politische Mitteilungen”).

The importance of the archive for Christian Democratic Politics for research into Christian democracy and the history of Germany since 1945 is recognized worldwide, which can be seen from the frequent consultation and use by foreign scholars.

The previous directors were Klaus Gotto , Günter Letter and Hanns Jürgen Küsters . Michael Borchard has headed the archive since 2018 .
