Günter letter (born February 20, 1944 in Lauchheim ) is a German historian and archivist .

Life

Letter studied history and Romance studies and was in 1974 with Stephan Skalweit at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn with the dissertation Imperial Cities, City Curia and Westphalian Peace Congress. Relationships between social structure, legal status and economic strength to the Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1976 he was deputy director of the institute and from 1989 to 2009 head of the main department Scientific Services / Archives for Christian Democratic Politics of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation . He is editor of the research and sources on contemporary history .

He is a member of the Commission for Contemporary History , a member of the Advisory Board on Social Approach / Victims and Remembrance of the Federal Foundation for the Processing of the SED Dictatorship , member of the scientific advisory board of the Foundation Archive of the Parties and Mass Organizations of the GDR in the Federal Archives . He was president of the section of archives and archivists of parliaments and political parties in the International Archives Council (1992-2000) and chairman of Section 6 in the Association of German archivists .
