Denis Kellman

Denis St. Elmo Kellman (* 25. January 1958 in Barbados ) is a politician from Barbados from the Democratic Labor Party (DLP), the 1994-2018 member of the House of Assembly and since 2011 Minister of Housing and Lands in the Cabinet of Prime Minister of Barbados friend Stuart was.

Life

Studies, accountant and social engagement

Kellman began his political and social engagement in sports and social clubs such as the Youth Milan Football Club in 1971 as a 13-year-old student . After attending school in 1977, he started working as an office assistant in the Haymans Factory , a sugar-manufacturing company in the country. He was also instrumental in the redevelopment of the Rockfield Community Center and the development of the North Stars Sports and Cultural Club .

He later studied at the Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity (BIMAP), at New Jersey College and the Certified General Accountants of Canada and, after graduating in 1987, started working as an accountant with his own law firm. In addition, he was an accountant in the main administration of the sugar industry until 1994 and was an active member of the Sugar Industry Supervisors Association ( SISA ), and as such was instrumental in protecting the pension rights of industrial workers. At that time he was also a member of the Executive Board of the DLP in Saint Lucy .

MP and Minister

In the elections of September 5, 1994, Kellman was elected as a candidate of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) for the first time a member of the House of Assembly and has since represented the constituency of St. Lucy . During his parliamentary membership he was a delegate at numerous conferences of the Parliamentary Association of the Commonwealth of Nations CPA (Commonwealth Parliamentary Association) in Australia , Canada , Bahamas , Belize , Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago and is also a member of the Universal Federation of Peace .

The first three legislative terms he belonged to the opposition , between the elections of January 20, 1999 and May 21, 2003 even as one of only two members of the DLP. After serving as first vice president of the DLP between 1999 and 2001, he served as acting president of the DLP in 2001.

After the DLP won the elections on January 15, 2008, he became ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) before becoming Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of the Environment, Water Resources and Drainage on October 23, 2010. On June 15, 2011, Kellman was appointed Minister of Industry, Small Business and Rural Development to his cabinet by Prime Minister Freudel Stuart . Since the elections of February 21, 2013 and the associated cabinet reshuffle, he has served as Minister for Housing and Lands . He remained a minister until the government was replaced in May 2018.

From his marriage to Paulevette Kellman the two sons Paul and Russell Kellman emerged.
