Freundel Jerome Stuart (* 27. April 1951 ) is a politician of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) from Barbados and had 2018 of 23 October 2010 to 25 May Prime Minister .

biography

After attending St. Mark's Boys School , St. Martin's Junior School and the Boys' Foundation School , he studied political science and history at the University of the West Indies in Cave Hill between 1971 and 1975 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Political Science and History). He completed a subsequent postgraduate study of law from 1977 to 1980 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), before he obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) after another postgraduate study in international public law in 1982 .

He then attended the Hugh Wooding Law School between 1982 and 1984 and, after obtaining the Legal Education Certificate in 1984, began working as a lawyer ( Attorney-at-Law ).

His political career began in 1994 as a candidate of the DLP with the election of a member of the Assembly House ( House of Assembly ) , which he, representing the constituency of St. Philip South belonged to the 1999th He was later a member of the Senate between 2003 and 2007 , before being re-elected to the House of Assembly on January 16, 2008. In this he has since represented the constituency of St. Michael South .

After the election of the DLP, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister, Attorney General and Minister of the Interior in his government on January 16, 2008 by Prime Minister David Thompson. In May 2010 he held a speech in this capacity at the Conference on the Common Security Policy of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the United States .

On October 23, 2010, he became Prime Minister after the death of Thompson. Adriel Brathwaite was succeeded as attorney general and interior minister .

In the parliamentary elections on February 21, 2013, the DLP won a narrow majority of 16 to 14 seats with him as the top candidate. This confirmed Freundel Stuart in office as Prime Minister of Barbados. On May 24, 2018, the DLP lost the election and the Barbados Labor Party (BLP) received more than 70% of the vote, with Mia Amor Mottley becoming the country's new Prime Minister .
