David Thompson was born the third child of Margaret and Charles Thompson, who were from Barbados. In 1966 he returned to the island nation with his family. Thompson graduated from Combermere School in 1979 and then studied law at the University of the West Indies (UWI). During his studies, which he was to graduate in 1984, he was involved in politics and was chairman of the youth organization of the social democratic Democratic Labor Party (DLP). In 1986 he joined the law firm of Errol Walton Barrow , founder of DLP and Prime Minister at the time.

After Barrow's death in 1987, Thompson took an active part in politics and won his parliamentary seat in a by-election. Four years later he became Minister for Local Development and Culture under Lloyd Erskine Sandiford , while he was promoted to Minister of Finance in 1993/94. In June 1994 he replaced Sandiford as DLP party leader.

While the DLP under Sandiford lost power to the Barbados Labor Party (BLP) through early elections in 1994 , Thompson was elected as the new party president in November 2005 and prevailed against Clyde Mascoll .

In January 2008 his Democratic Labor Party won the early general election against the Barbados Labor Party. A day later, on January 16, Thompson was introduced as Prime Minister of Barbados, succeeding Owen Arthur (BLP). Until September 2010 he was also responsible for the Ministry of Finance.

Thompson had been married since 1989 and had three daughters. He died of pancreatic cancer on October 23, 2010 at the age of 48 .
