Byzantine coin

With Byzantine coin is in the Heraldry a crest figure denotes that a golden ball is. The peculiarity of this ball is the hint of chasing or characters.

The term goes back to the coins they brought with them, which the crusaders attached to the escutcheon like a coat of arms reinforcement. In modern heraldry, these balls are called bales, billen, pennies, coat of arms pennies or cakes.

In English heraldry these arms character has a special meaning. As roundels or Roundlets they serve as a motif , and in gold they are called Besant following the Byzantine coin. In silver they are balls and are called plates.

The coat of arms of the Lords of Berckefeldt shows seven (1,3,3) balls as golden Besanten.
