Yilian Cañizares (* 1983 in Havana ) is a Cuban - Swiss musician who has lived in Switzerland since 2000.

Life

Yilian Cañizares, who was born in Havana , studied violin there in the strict Russian tradition. In 1997 she moved to Venezuela to continue her studies. Three years later she moved to Switzerland to complete her education at the Friborg Conservatory . She first planned to become a classical musician. In Switzerland, she began to be more interested in jazz and decided to sing. She still lives there and now has Swiss citizenship. She found her own style after discovering the music of the French jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli . She decided to mix his way with Cuban music.

After finishing her studies, she founded the band Ochumare , which means “rainbow” in Yoruba , with David Brito ( double bass ) and Cyril Régamey ( drums and percussion ). She then continued her career under her own name. It was named 2013 Discovery of the Year by the French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur and the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles included its album Invocación in the Ten Must-Have Albums in South America in 2015. She also teaches violin and jazz improvisation at the Lausanne Music School .

style

Her style is a reflection of various influences with a touch of jazz , classical music , Cuban music and plenty of room for improvisation. The French magazine Les Inrockuptibles speaks of a jazz instrumentation mixed with yoruba ritual percussion. She sings in Spanish, Yoruba and French and one of her characteristics is that she sings and plays at the same time.
