Le Courrier is a national, French-language daily newspaper from Geneva . It focuses on Christian and social issues, making it the only left-wing daily newspaper in Switzerland. She tries to express this with her motto “L'essentiel, autrement” (“The essential, the other way around”).

history

Le Courrier was founded on January 5, 1868 as a Sunday paper with the subtitle "Feuille religieuse et nationale" to represent Catholic interests in Protestant Geneva. The sale took place at the Catholic church doors. In 1892 Le Courrier became a daily newspaper with a circulation of 3,000 to 4,000 copies. After the separation of church and state in 1907, the Catholic Kampfblatt lost its raison d'être and the circulation dropped to 1000 copies.

Under the editor-in-chief René Leyvraz, the Catholic-conservative newspaper became a Christian-social newspaper from 1923 with 5700 copies sold in 1932. However, the line of the paper was too left for the Catholic Church as the owner of the paper. The editor-in-chief was changed in 1935, after which the circulation was halved. Ten years later Leyvraz was brought back, and another four years later the number of subscribers had tripled, leveling off at 8,000 copies by the 1960s.

Between 1970 and 1980 the circulation decreased from 9000 to 4000 copies. Thanks to subsidies of CHF 300,000 annually from the Catholic Church and the Paulus printer in Freiburg, the paper survived. In 1996 the Church again criticized the orientation of the newspaper, which was too strongly oriented towards the message of the Gospel and was therefore too socially committed. She announced the cut in subsidies or their complete lifting if the editor-in-chief was not replaced. The newspaper rejected the request, which led to the final break with the church.

The WEMF - certified circulation is 7,014 (previous year 7,200) sold / distributed copies. The newspaper had its highest circulation in 2004 with 10,000 copies.

organization

The Courrier has worked closely with the Catholic La Liberté from Freiburg since 1966 . He has been getting the coat part from her since the 1970s.

The newspaper is supported by many Christian, alternative, cultural and non-governmental organizations represented in the Nouvelle association du Courrier, for which Le Courrier is often the only mouthpiece. Thanks to an editorial collaboration with La Liberté , La Libre Belgique , Témoignage chrétien , Le Monde diplomatique , Il Manifesto and donations from the readership, it survived and is now seeing increasing readership.

Le Courrier is the only daily newspaper printed in Geneva.

In addition to the main editorial office in Geneva (responsible for Geneva, religion, culture, development, solidarity, north-south), the newspaper has local editorial offices in Sierre (Valais), Lausanne (Vaud) and Neuchâtel (Neuchâtel). There are no local editorial offices in Freiburg and the North Vaud, which are covered by the partner La Liberté (Freiburg; domestic, international, sport).
